**Chapter 17: The Set Up**
As Wendy spoke, a radiant smile blossomed on her face, illuminating the room with an air of admiration. “Helen, you’re so young yet already such a remarkable doctor. The Morgans must have truly cherished you, nurturing you into this extraordinary individual. I can’t help but wonder, who is your mentor?”
The instant she mentioned the Morgans, a subtle tension rippled through Felix and Helen’s parents, their bodies stiffening almost imperceptibly.
Before bringing Helen into their home, they had meticulously scrutinized her upbringing, eager to understand the years she had spent under the Morgans’ roof.
Helen had been sent to the tranquil countryside as a child, raised by Jacob’s mother, the formidable Victoria Morgan.
Yet, the Morgans had never truly participated in her upbringing; they had not nurtured her, nor had they provided her with the guidance one would expect from a family.
And that was precisely the reaction Wendy had been hoping to elicit.
A girl raised in the countryside—how could she possibly have acquired such advanced medical skills?
In Wendy’s mind, Helen’s so-called heroic rescue at the hospital was merely a self-staged performance, a facade crafted to win over the family. She envisioned Helen using this newfound identity to manipulate George into compliance, all to secure her place in their home.
Felix, Alexander, and Rebecca were all astute individuals.
Surely, they would see through Helen’s charade!
Wendy had been eagerly anticipating the moment her parents would unveil Helen’s true nature and bring her crashing down.
However, the scene she had envisioned never materialized.
Felix’s face radiated pride. “As expected of my granddaughter—she’s truly extraordinary.”
Alexander’s eyes glimmered with satisfaction. “That’s my daughter—born with exceptional talent.”
Rebecca’s eyes sparkled like the night sky, her expression brimming with admiration. “My precious girl—so young, yet already a medical genius!”
Wendy was rendered speechless.
This was not the response she had anticipated.
Shouldn’t they at least question how a girl from the countryside could possess such medical knowledge?
Their bias toward Helen had clearly reached celestial heights.
Wendy’s nails dug painfully into her palms as she wrestled with a tempest of jealousy, forcing herself to speak again. “Helen, since you’re so skilled and could even save a car crash victim on the brink of death, then… you must be able to heal Grandpa’s legs, right?”
Her eyes sparkled with a feigned sincerity and hope, as if she genuinely wished for Helen to perform a miracle on Felix.
But that single sentence shattered the warm, harmonious atmosphere that had enveloped the table.
His voice was detached, but Helen perceived the underlying tremor.
Beneath that flat tone lay a hint of vulnerability.
Wendy seemed to grasp that she had crossed a line. She gasped softly, covering her mouth, her face awash with guilt. “Helen, I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to put you on the spot. I just heard how skilled you are and thought…”
“Oh, don’t take it to heart, really. Don’t feel burdened,” she interjected, lightly slapping her hand against her mouth, forcing a sheepish laugh. “It’s just my foolish tongue—I shouldn’t have brought it up…”
“If you know you’re foolish, then stop talking,” Helen replied coolly, her voice steady as her gaze turned frosty.
She was already weary of Wendy’s little game and had no desire to indulge her.
Setting down her cutlery, Helen fixed her gaze on Felix’s legs, her voice unwavering. “I can cure Grandpa’s legs.”
“Helen, y-you can?”
Alexander, Rebecca, and Felix all paused, their expressions a blend of overwhelming joy and cautious hope. “Helen… you can truly cure your Grandpa’s legs?”
Rebecca was so taken aback that the spoon slipped from her fingers, clattering against her plate.
That small sound seemed to jolt Felix back to reality. His hand tightened around his fork, and for the first time in years, a flicker of light ignited in his cold, distant eyes.
