Larissa Judson and Haskell Palmer novel Chapter 222

“That works,” Sapphira said with a nod. “If any of your friends from the village need a ride, your father and I can send a car.”

Larissa smiled. “That’s kind, but it won’t be necessary. They have their own cars. The only question is whether they’ll have the time.”

After all, they were a very busy group of researchers.

“Alright. But if you need anything at all, just ask. Your dad and I will be there to support you through this, just like we were for your welcome party.” Sapphira was as attentive as ever when it came to matters concerning Larissa.

Neville, sitting on the other side of the sofa, added, “Thankfully, the Palmer family is hosting this time. With Leopold still in a coma at the hospital, I doubt Paxton and Vivica will dare to cause another scene.”

His words seemed to reassure Sapphira.

“You’re right. They wouldn’t dare make a spectacle of themselves at a Palmer family event.”

“Still,” Neville said, a hint of worry in his voice, “some of the Palmers will likely make an issue of Haskell’s legs. He’s going to be under a lot of pressure, and that could spill over onto you, Larissa. You need to be prepared for it.”

But far from being afraid, Larissa seemed almost excited by the prospect. She loved nothing more than putting people who kicked others when they were down in their place, especially those who walked right into it.

Let them come. She’d take them on one by one or two by two.

A cunning glint appeared in her eyes as she smiled leisurely. “Dad, Mom, don’t worry about me. You saw how I handled myself at the welcome party. I’ve never been one to get stage fright. If anyone tries to give me a hard time, I’ll give it right back to them.”

Seeing her fearless demeanor, Sapphira’s face softened into a proud smile. “You’re right. My daughter is so capable, it’s hard to say who should really be intimidated. You were just discharged today, so you should get some rest. Finish up your guest list and head to bed. Saturday is going to be another exhausting battle.”

[Got it. I’ll make sure they are all well taken care of.]

In the hospital room.

Haskell carefully reviewed the list Larissa had sent. It contained only names, but several of them struck him as familiar. They were the same as some of the old guard who had once dominated Regal City’s social circles. Most of these titans had since retired, their names fading from public discourse.

He knew it couldn’t be a coincidence. After all, if Larissa knew Solon, the sole heir to the Schwartz family, it wasn’t a stretch to think she knew other powerful figures in the city.

Larissa was a woman of hidden depths. He wondered what other surprises she had in store for the engagement party. Perhaps she would make an even bigger splash than she had at her welcome reception.
