“Haskell, I have to take this,” Larissa said, a hint of regret in her voice. As much as she wanted to keep talking to him, she knew Livia wouldn’t call this late unless it was important. “Let’s call it a night. Get some rest.”
Haskell’s lips curved into a warm smile. “Okay. You go ahead.”
After ending the call with him, Larissa shifted in bed and answered Livia’s call.
“What’s up? It’s late,” Larissa said.
Livia’s voice was tense on the other end. “I overheard Lucius and Milton tonight. They’re planning some kind of big move against you at your birthday party.”
Larissa’s brow furrowed slightly, then she let out a short, cynical laugh. “A big move? I’d love to know how Lucius plans to crash my party when the Lincoln family isn’t even on the guest list.”
“If I had to guess, it was your scumbag father, Paxton, who called Lucius’s assistant,” Livia said. “I heard Lucius say he was handing Josette over to Paxton, telling him to find his own way into the Judson estate for your party.”
“I see… So Paxton really has thrown in with the Lincolns.”
Larissa wasn’t surprised, but she was curious. How did they plan to use Josette to get in? The last time she saw her, Josette had a massive falling out with Kiernan, swearing she’d never set foot in the Judson house again—not even for his funeral.
“I’m not overstepping, am I?” Livia asked tentatively.
Larissa could hear the yearning for approval in her voice. While she hadn’t wanted Livia to take unnecessary risks, she decided to respect her choice.
“Your tip is very useful,” Larissa said. “As a thank you, on top of helping you secure Gale Entertainment, I’ll do one other thing for you. Name it.”
There was a moment of silence, then Livia’s breathing grew heavy.
“I want Theon’s mother to suffer a hundred times more than my mother ever did,” she bit out.
The most serious thing would be… someone ending up dead.
Was he planning to poison someone at her party and frame her for it? That seemed stupid. Who would poison someone at their own birthday celebration?
For now, she had no clear answers. It seemed she’d have to get Nightveil to dig into what exactly Paxton offered Lucius in exchange for his help.
She picked up her phone and dialed. “Nightveil, put someone on Paxton. I want to know his every move.”
“Right away, Boss.”
...
After ending his video call with Larissa, Haskell was about to put his phone on the nightstand when a text from his brother, Rigby, lit up the screen.
