“It’s alright, Grandpa,” Larissa said with a calm smile. “I let them make a scene on purpose.”
Kiernan looked at her, confused. “What do you mean?”
“You’ll see soon enough,” she replied mysteriously.
Josette overheard this and felt a chill. What did Larissa mean, she “let” them? As she was pondering this, Larissa’s gaze fell upon her.
Josette immediately went on the defensive. “Larissa, I’m not on Paxton’s side. I genuinely just want a place to stay with the Judson family.”
A wry smile played on Larissa’s lips. “It seems life hasn’t been easy for you with the Lincolns since Jagger was arrested. I’m curious, Aunt Josette, now that you have nowhere else to go, do you truly not hold any resentment toward me?”
Of course she did, but she forced a smile. “My dear niece, Jagger Lincoln got what he deserved! He was a menace. My miserable situation is because I married the wrong man. It has nothing to do with you.”
“Is that so?” Larissa’s expression was openly mocking. “Well, you’d better be on your best behavior. If you want to live in this house, it’s not just up to Grandpa. If you displease me in any way, I can have you thrown out at a moment’s notice.”
“...Don’t worry,” Josette said, swallowing her pride. “I’ll behave.”
...
“Larissa! You monster! You’ll pay for what you’ve done to your own mother!”
“Just you wait! I’ll find a way to get back at you!”
“I’ll make you suffer a hundred times more than you made me suffer!”
So Leopold asked, “Mom, are you okay?”
While Finley demanded, “Mom, why are you so stubborn?”
Finley’s words were another blow to Vivica’s heart, but Leopold’s concern was a small comfort. At least one of her sons wasn’t a total loss.
“After everything I’ve been through, you call me stubborn? You’re the stubborn one, Finley!” she sobbed. “If I hadn’t gone to Spire Village to find you, that monster Larissa never would have had the chance to kidnap and torture me!”
“How can you be so sure it was her?!” Finley yelled.
“I just am! Who else could it be? Your father?!” she shot back.
