Zoltan slammed his coffee cup down on the table. “Nonsense! You think this is some petty family feud orchestrated by Haskell?”
Seeing his grandfather’s anger, Solomon fell silent, his bravado instantly deflating.
After a long moment, he muttered resentfully, “Grandpa, even if Haskell wasn’t directly responsible for the contraband, he’s definitely connected to it!”
His voice was loud, and he shot a sharp glare at the unperturbed Haskell.
“Oh?” Zoltan said. “And how, exactly, is he connected?”
Solomon let out a bitter huff. “Grandpa, you’ve always favored Haskell. You’re just pretending not to know.”
Haskell, who had been silent the entire time, finally spoke, his voice calm. “What Solomon means is that I may have offended a certain powerful figure, which has brought trouble upon the company.”
Solomon’s eyes widened in fury. “And isn’t that the truth? Look at that woman, Larissa! She’s been turning Regal City upside down! Do you think she’d be so bold if she didn’t have you backing her? Would she have the guts to openly challenge the Lincoln family without her marriage alliance to you? And now, she’s publicly exposed the powerful figure behind the Lincoln family!”
“Haskell, don’t say I didn’t warn you. The Palmer and Lincoln families have always been rivals, but we’ve maintained a fragile peace for years. The only reason you haven’t been able to crush them is because you know who’s backing them!”
“But now? Larissa has walked right into the lion’s den! If you weren’t the one who sabotaged the shipment, then it must have been this person Larissa offended! This is obviously them sending us a warning shot!”
“Calm down,” Zoltan said, seeing Solomon’s agitation. He gestured for the butler to pour him a cup of coffee.
Not wanting to be drawn into Haskell’s narrative, Solomon snapped, “Haskell, stop changing the subject!”
“I’m not changing the subject; I’m addressing the facts,” Haskell said coolly. “Our African operations have been stable for years, aside from some initial turmoil when we were first establishing ourselves. But now, a massive blunder like this occurs. Shouldn’t you and Uncle Tobias be looking inward and examining your own failings first?”
“Are you trying to say this is my father’s and my fault?” Solomon yelled, his voice echoing in the room. “This is clearly because of your troublemaking fiancée, Larissa!”
Haskell looked at him, his expression unreadable. “Then what do you propose we do?”
“Break off the engagement with Larissa!” Solomon declared without hesitation. “Issue a public statement severing all ties with the Judson family!”
