“But Haskell, to make this a bigger deal, I need you to pretend you’re more seriously injured.”
Haskell understood immediately. She wanted to use the Palmer family’s influence to press criminal charges against Leopold for his deliberate actions. Larissa was brilliant.
“No problem,” he said with a smile. “I’ll support you in whatever you want to do.”
“Alright. I’m going to give us both a little prick with a needle. Once we’re unconscious, let your man Crispin handle the aftermath.”
“Okay.”
With Haskell’s agreement, Larissa retrieved a thin silver needle from her sleeve. She administered one to Haskell, then one to herself. Soon, their eyelids grew heavy, and their vision blurred. Within moments, they both closed their eyes and fell into a deep, feigned unconsciousness.
…
Night fell.
Moonlight streamed through the window, illuminating Larissa’s still form on the hospital bed. Sapphira sat beside her, her eyes glistening with unshed tears as she watched her daughter’s pale face.
Suddenly, Larissa’s eyelashes fluttered. Sapphira’s eyes widened, and she leaned in closer.
When Larissa opened her eyes, the first thing she saw was her beautiful new mother’s tear-filled gaze.
“Larissa’s awake! Neville, she’s awake!” Sapphira exclaimed, jumping to her feet.
Neville, who had been pacing anxiously by the window, rushed over. “Larissa, how do you feel?”
“Dad… Mom…” Larissa’s voice was weak. She tried to sit up, and Sapphira immediately supported her back. “Be careful, don’t pull on your wounds.”
Once upright, Larissa touched her head. “My head’s still a little dizzy… Mom, are we in a hospital?”
“I know, Dad.”
After Neville left, Larissa lay back down.
“If you feel any discomfort, you have to tell me, okay?” Sapphira said gently. “You must be hungry. I’ll have Wren bring you some food.”
“Okay.” Larissa then remembered something. “Mom, what happened to the driver of the car I hit?”
At this, Sapphira’s expression shifted. “Do you know whose car you hit?”
Larissa, of course, knew, but she feigned ignorance. “Whose?”
Sapphira replied, “It was Leopold’s. His condition is critical. He’s still in surgery. The doctors said it’s uncertain if he’ll make it, and even if he does, there’s a high chance he’ll be in a vegetative state.”
