Before Larissa could react, Sapphira continued, “Larissa, don’t think about this for now. Just focus on getting better.”
Larissa understood that her mother was worried about her mental state, so she simply nodded. “Okay.”
“You rest. I’ll wake you when Wren arrives with your food.”
“Alright.”
Sapphira gently helped Larissa lie back down and tucked the blanket around her. Watching her daughter’s pale, bloodless face as she closed her eyes, Sapphira quietly wiped away a tear. She had almost lost her child. If anything had happened to Larissa, she couldn’t imagine the pain of outliving her own daughter.
After a long moment, Sapphira took a deep breath and stepped out of the room, where she met Neville returning from the room next door. They walked together to the end of the hallway.
“How is Mr. Palmer?” Sapphira asked, standing by the window.
“He’s fine,” Neville said with a sigh. “Haskell’s assistant said it’s just a mild concussion and some cuts and bruises. The poor kid… in all this time, only Zoltan has come to visit. His father and siblings haven’t shown up at all.”
“I see… I’m glad Mr. Palmer is okay,” Sapphira said worriedly. “Neville, this accident has left Leopold’s life hanging in the balance. Paxton and Vivica will never let this go. They’ll come after Larissa.”
Neville put an arm around her shoulders. “As long as Larissa didn’t do it on purpose, they can raise all the hell they want. I won’t let them hurt her again.”
Sapphira looked down, her voice laced with concern. “But what if it was on purpose?” She paused, then added softly, “When I told Larissa that the person she hit was Leopold, she wasn’t as shocked as I expected. It was as if she already knew.”
Neville’s hand on her shoulder tightened. “And what do you think?”
The words struck Vivica like a physical blow. Her legs gave out, and she would have collapsed if Finley hadn’t been there to catch her. Her son might become a vegetable.
After Leopold was settled in his room, Vivica stared at her son’s motionless, pale form and broke down into sobs.
“How could this happen… How could this happen to Leopold…”
Paxton’s face was contorted with pain. His eldest son’s legs had been injured not long ago, and now his second son was in a coma after a car crash—a crash caused by Larissa. No matter how he looked at it, he couldn’t shake the feeling that she was at the center of all their misfortunes.
Honora stood by, covering her face and crying softly. “Mom, it’s all my fault… I shouldn’t have let Leopold come with Finley and me to meet Field of Lari…”
