Late that night, Honora quietly entered Leopold’s room.

“Mom,” she whispered to Vivica, “it’s midnight. You should go rest. I’ll watch over Leopold. You can’t afford to collapse before he even wakes up.”

Vivica, exhausted, finally relented. “Alright. You watch him closely. Keep talking to him. Try to wake him up. It’s the least you can do after how much he’s doted on you.”

“Of course, Mom. I’ll take good care of him,” Honora said dutifully.

Vivica left, and Honora watched until the elevator doors closed before shutting the hospital room door. She sat down by Leopold’s bed and looked at his still form.

As she spoke, Honora pulled a small syringe, disguised as a lipstick tube, from her purse. She pushed the plunger slightly, and two clear drops of liquid appeared at the needle’s tip. She aimed it at the vein in Leopold’s elbow and slowly injected the entire contents.

“Leopold, this will keep you in a coma forever,” she whispered, her voice laced with a twisted sorrow. “Don’t blame me. Blame Larissa for not being a quiet little substitute bride. And blame yourself for investigating me, for no longer trusting me unconditionally. Just sleep forever, Leopold. That way, in your mind, I’ll always be your perfect, innocent little sister.”

On the bed, Leopold’s mind screamed in disbelief. He tried to open his eyes, to fight, but his body wouldn’t respond.

He was awake, a prisoner in his own flesh.
