Finley was rendered speechless. He opened his mouth to argue, but the words wouldn’t come. He had no counterargument.
It was true. All the evidence pointed to Larissa being exceptionally gifted, turning impossibilities into realities time and again. The idea of her being Field of Lari wasn’t so far-fetched after all.
So why couldn’t he bring himself to believe it?
“Let’s be blunt. You’re prejudiced against Larissa,” Kiernan stated flatly. “Or perhaps you simply can’t admit she’s so outstanding because it would be a direct blow to your own egos.”
He sighed and turned his gaze to his granddaughter. “Larissa, I’ll ask you directly. Are you the famous novelist Finley mentioned, Field of Lari?”
Finley held his breath, a knot of tension tightening in his stomach. Just as his grandfather had said, he was terrified of hearing her answer.
Larissa glanced at him, a knowing smile playing on her lips. She understood his fear perfectly. “Grandpa,” she said calmly, “to be honest, yes. I am Field of Lari.”
Her words shattered Finley’s last vestiges of hope. This time, he didn’t doubt her; there was no reason for her to lie to their grandfather. The realization hit him like a physical blow.
His own sister was this brilliant?
If that was the case, his plan to acquire the rights to her novel was completely dead in the water.
Kiernan saw the despair in Finley’s eyes. “Finley,” he said, his voice laced with disappointment, “do you now see how wrong you were? How wrong your parents and Leopold have been?”
The questions left Finley flushed with shame.
But Kiernan wasn’t finished twisting the knife. He revealed an even harsher truth. “There’s something else I haven’t told you. I’ve made a promise to Larissa. If you fail to produce any significant results by the end of this month, she will take over management of Starlight Media starting next month.”
A playful glint appeared in Larissa’s eyes. “Tell her that Solon is the sole heir to the Schwartz family of Regal City.”
Finley froze, his expression cracking. The Schwartz family? That Solon was their only son?
Not just Finley, but Kiernan too looked up in surprise. The Schwartz family was on par with the Palmers, one of the most powerful dynasties in Regal City.
As Finley departed, looking utterly lost, Kiernan sighed. “Larissa, I know you hold a grudge against Paxton and his family, but there are lines you shouldn’t cross.”
Larissa smiled serenely. “Grandpa, as I’ve said, I have no intention of taking their lives. But that’s conditional on them not coming after mine.”
“Just be sensible about it,” Kiernan conceded. He was beginning to realize that the more brilliant his granddaughter proved to be, the less right he had to lecture her.
