“I am so tired,” Larissa whined playfully. “How about you feed me, Mom? I don’t want to move.”
Sapphira chuckled, her eyes sparkling. “You’re a grown woman, asking me to feed you. Aren’t you ashamed?”
Despite her words, she had already picked up the fork.
“Sit up straight. Your hands must be sore after all that work. I’ll feed you.”
“Okay!” Larissa immediately sat up and opened her mouth like a baby bird. “Ahhh—”
Sapphira placed a tender piece of beef in her mouth, then followed it with a spoonful of rice.
Larissa chewed happily, a wide grin on her face. “Somehow, it tastes even better when you feed me.”
“Oh, you flatterer. You always know just what to say to make me happy,” Sapphira said, her own smile never fading.
“Well, you said you were happy, so of course I’m going to say nice things,” Larissa replied without a hint of shame.
Joy radiated from every part of Sapphira’s face. “Of course I’m happy. Why wouldn’t I be, with my daughter praising me?”
Watching her beautiful new mother’s genuine laughter, Larissa felt a warmth spread through her chest. After swallowing, she opened her mouth for another bite.
This, she thought, was what peace felt like.
…
“A million? For what? Didn’t I tell you to submit a request? If the reason is convincing, I’ll approve it.” Haskell’s tone was non-negotiable.
“I have to submit a request for a million dollars? What am I, a beggar?” Thatch’s veins bulged in his neck.
The hospital had given him the bill for Valeria’s treatment. Her knees were severely injured, and the costs for a private suite, round-the-clock care, and specialized nurses had already wiped out his personal funds.
Getting Valeria’s legs to heal properly would cost a fortune. He had originally planned to ask for five million but figured a million would be an easier sell given his strained relationship with Haskell. He never imagined Haskell would refuse him even that.
Haskell pulled the blanket over his legs and smirked at Thatch’s furious expression. “You’ve lived half your life and can’t even produce a million dollars, yet you have the gall to demand it from me. If that’s not a beggar, what is?”
“A real beggar would probably worship me as a living god if they knew they could get a million just by writing a request. You, on the other hand, show no gratitude at all.”
