“He was on crutches at the welcome banquet last time. I thought he’d just sprained it or something. It’s been a week, and he’s still not better. Don’t tell me he’s actually crippled now?”
“I don’t know. Did a memo go out that all handsome rich guys have to break a leg? Mr. Palmer is in a wheelchair, and now Finley’s limping.”
“That is interesting.”
“Shh—”
The gossiping group fell silent as they noticed Paxton and Vivica getting out of their car nearby. Paxton shot them a cold, piercing glare, while Vivica looked furious.
Thankfully, the couple didn’t say anything and strode toward the open gates of the manor. The young socialites let out a collective sigh of relief.
…
“The people here tonight are supposed to be high-society. What kind of behavior is it to gossip about others behind their backs!” Vivica was fuming after hearing her son being discussed so callously.
At first, she had thought Finley was just being dramatic when he said his leg was ruined, but now she knew it was true. Her husband, Paxton, had already contacted the world’s leading prosthetics expert to fit their son with the best artificial limb available.
Fate was so cruel! Why did this have to happen to her talented young son?
At least, compared to Haskell, he had only lost one leg.
Tonight, their family wouldn’t be able to cause any trouble for Larissa. Their only hope was that someone within the Palmer family would be restless enough to seize the opportunity to undermine Haskell. He certainly didn’t want Haskell to become the Palmer family heir.
“Neville, Sapphira, you two must be exhausted. There are so many distinguished guests arriving today. You must be good hosts and make sure nothing goes wrong at such an important event.
And keep a close watch on that girl, Larissa. Don’t let her cause any trouble here at the Palmer estate. It would be a disgrace to the Judson family name,” Vivica said pointedly as she approached Sapphira and Neville, who were greeting guests at the entrance.
Sapphira maintained a gracious smile, her reply equally barbed. “Don’t you worry, Vivica. As long as no petty schemers are at work, there won’t be any trouble. Larissa’s father and I will make sure that no one who stoops to backstabbing ruins our daughter’s engagement party.”
Vivica glanced around, her smile laced with venom. “This is the Palmer estate, after all. I’m just afraid you and Neville won’t have the power to stop anything. Look, on such a momentous day, Haskell’s own father, Thatch, isn’t even here to greet guests. He must have given up on his son. Once Haskell loses his standing in the Palmer family, who will be left to protect your troublemaking daughter? You’d best watch your step.”
