Faith glanced at Larissa, a half-smile on her face. “Your performance just now was quite impressive, Ms. Judson. But once you marry into the Palmer family, you’ll have to try even harder.”

A knowing smile spread across Larissa’s face. “That was nothing. I was actually worried the challenges would all be this trivial. It’s hardly worth my effort.”

Faith sneered. “You certainly have a high opinion of yourself, Ms. Judson. Let’s just hope you can back it up, or you’ll end up being the laughingstock of the city.”

With a final, insincere smile, she turned and followed Solomon out.

Trevor also led his two sons from the hall. As they passed Haskell and Larissa, he couldn’t resist a cold laugh. “Haskell, it seems your grandfather chose a fine wife for you.”

“Uncle Trevor,” Haskell replied with a smile, “I chose Larissa myself.”

“Oh?” Trevor said, his tone heavy with meaning. “So she’s precious to you. You’d better watch her closely then. Wouldn’t want her to have any… accidents.”

Haskell’s smile was just as sharp. “Thank you for the warning, Uncle Trevor. I’ll be sure to extinguish any potential ‘accidents’ around Larissa.”

“A pity that plans rarely survive contact with reality. No matter how careful you are, there are always oversights,” Trevor said before striding away.

Fraser followed silently behind him. Garrick, however, shot Larissa one last glare, mouthing the words, “You’re dead”, before storming off.

Once they were all gone, the hall fell quiet.

Zoltan turned to Larissa. “You’ve seen the situation in this family for yourself. I can only give Haskell three months. If you can’t heal his legs by then, an old man like me won’t be able to hold back this pack of wolves.”

“Not now,” Jagger interrupted.

The truth was, he had tried to contact Zendar but had been unsuccessful. Having already boasted to his wife, he couldn’t admit failure. It was better to stall.

Given Jagger’s status, Paxton didn’t dare press him, but he ventured, “I heard Zendar might be attending tonight as a guest.”
