Sapphira nodded. “I’m not.”
She wasn’t afraid because Larissa had warned them that something major might happen tonight and had taken precautions, dusting their clothes with a special powder.
“What about Dad…?” Sapphira whispered.
“Larissa is a smart girl,” Neville murmured back. “If she prepared us, she wouldn’t have forgotten about him.”
Josette scrambled to her feet in terror, reaching for her husband, but her hand found only air. Jagger had already shaken her off and was retreating to a safer spot.
“Jagger, you damn coward!” Josette screamed, a mixture of fear and rage consuming her. But there was no time to argue; she quickly ran after him.
“Finley, Honora, are you alright…?” Vivica stood up in a panic, trying to check on her son and adopted daughter when she heard a sharp cry.
“Ah!”
The cry came from Honora. She felt a sharp pain in her ankle. Looking down, she saw a massive scorpion latched onto her.
“What’s wrong?” Finley asked, his voice tight with alarm.
“I… I’ve been bitten,” Honora stammered, her face pale with shock, her normally rosy lips now bloodless.
Finley’s face went white. He followed her gaze and saw a giant scorpion, the size of his palm, clamped onto her exposed ankle.
“Damn it!”
Ignoring the danger, he grabbed a knife and fork from the table, bent down, and pried the scorpion off, flinging it to the floor before stomping it into a paste.
Honora clung to Finley’s arm, her eyes welling with tears as she whimpered, “Finley, what do we do? I think… I think it’s poisonous.”
Finley was speechless. That useless Draven was more trouble than he was worth.
One by one, they emerged from under the tables and, in an orderly fashion, began to retreat, slithering silently out of the banquet hall.
The guests looked around, bewildered, until their eyes fell on Larissa. She held a single green leaf between her fingers, her lips pressed to its edge. The beautiful, haunting melody was coming from that simple leaf.
Larissa continued to play for about three minutes, and by the time she stopped, every last one of the terrifying creatures had vanished. The hall was once again calm.
“What just happened? Did those snakes and scorpions really just leave because of the music she was playing?”
“This is too strange!”
“You don’t think… she was the one who summoned them, do you?”
Now that the danger had passed, the guests began to whisper amongst themselves, their fear turning to suspicion.
