With the immediate threat gone, the terrified and shaken guests turned their attention to Haskell and Larissa, demanding answers.
“Mr. Palmer, Ms. Judson, I believe you owe us an explanation! How could such a catastrophic failure of security happen at your engagement party?”
“Yes, and some of us have been bitten! We’re poisoned!”
“If anyone dies because of this, not even the Palmer family will be able to bear the responsibility!”
The guests exchanged nervous glances, trying to identify the victims.
Draven watched it all with a triumphant smirk. All the scrutiny that had been focused on him was now squarely on Haskell and Larissa. All he had to do was wait for the right moment to explain that he had known about Larissa’s wicked nature all along and had only been trying to stop her from marrying Haskell. That would clear him of the whole Torrin fiasco.
Just then, Finley, after steadying Honora, stepped forward and pointed an accusing finger. “Larissa, you were the one who summoned those creatures, weren’t you? Honora has been bitten!”
“Finley! How dare you make such an accusation?” Sapphira shot back immediately.
Neville stood beside her, his voice cold as ice. “Finley, to accuse Larissa of something like this in front of everyone… are you trying to get her killed?”
Finley’s face was grim. “It’s not an accusation!”
“Not an accusation? Do you have proof?” a guest called out in surprise.
Finley nodded firmly. “Yes, I have proof!”
He then turned to Haskell. “Bro, you wanted an explanation from me earlier? This is it.”
Haskell’s deep eyes narrowed slightly. “Oh? Go on.”
“I investigated Larissa,” Draven declared righteously. “I discovered she has a dark, sinister past. She’s been able to commune with creatures like the ones we saw tonight since she was a child. I was afraid that if she married you, she would pose a threat to your safety, and to Grandpa’s. That’s why I tried to stop this engagement.”
He adopted a look of pained sincerity, his voice thick with emotion. “But I knew you had developed real feelings for her. If I had told you directly, you wouldn’t have believed me, and it would have only alerted her. I didn’t want to trouble you, so I handled everything myself—including finding Torrin. I was just using him to break the engagement.”
The guests listened, captivated.
“So that’s what was really going on.”
