Hearing Larissa’s question over the phone, Honora froze for a second before she understood. Larissa was doing this deliberately, testing her importance in Finley’s heart.
In the past, she would have been confident he’d choose her. But now, after he had gone to Larissa alone, she knew he cared more about his own life. He would definitely choose himself.
She had to strike first.
“Finley, don’t worry about me,” she said, her voice soft but firm. “Let her cure you. I’ll find a way to deal with my own poison. I won’t be a burden to you!”
“See? Your sister is so considerate,” Larissa said, her eyes fixed mockingly on Finley, knowing full well Honora was manipulating the situation.
If Larissa hadn’t made this call, Finley would have certainly chosen to save himself first. Once cured, he could have focused on finding a cure for Honora.
But now, with Honora listening, waiting for his answer—and after she had so selflessly told him to save himself—how could he possibly abandon her? What kind of brother, what kind of man, would that make him? If Leopold were here, he would despise him for it.
Larissa hated Honora. This would be her only chance for a cure. As for himself, Larissa was his biological sister; as much as she hated him, she wouldn’t actually let him die.
In just a few seconds, Finley’s mind raced through every possibility.
“Neither of your poisons is fatal,” Larissa added, twisting the knife. “One just causes excruciating pain, and the other… well, it just ruins your face. So, Finley, what’s your choice?”
Honora spoke again, her tone grave. “Larissa, you don’t have to ask him again. Just cure him. I don’t need your help!”
Finley finally found his voice. “Larissa, this is a test, isn’t it? You’re still upset that we chose Honora over you.”
Larissa chuckled. “Congratulations, Honora. Finley chose you. Come find me whenever you want the antidote. Of course, you could always pass up the opportunity, since you were so adamant just now that you didn’t need my help.”
Honora maintained her righteous tone. “If I give up my chance, will you cure Finley instead?”
Finley immediately cut in, “Honora, don’t be ridiculous!”
“Finley…”
“Enough. I’ll find a way to deal with my own poison. This is the last thing I can do for you. After this, you will leave the Judson family and take care of yourself,” Finley said sternly.
