Leopold wasn’t surprised by Larissa’s cold reply. He didn’t write back. Instead, he sent the photos of a disheveled Finley he’d taken earlier to his grandfather. After waiting a few moments, he dialed his number.
It was the first time he had contacted his grandfather since being cast out of the Judson family. He hadn’t felt he had the right to before. He wondered if his grandfather had forgiven him for what he’d done to his sister.
The phone rang for a long time before an old, weary voice answered.
“What is it?”
“Grandpa, did you see the photos I sent you? Finley is in a lot of pain. Can you please talk to Larissa for him? Ask her to give him the antidote.” Leopold’s voice was pleading. “I’m sure you know Larissa poisoned him as revenge.”
There was a long silence on the other end, followed by a heavy sigh. “You know your sister’s temperament. Even if I were to ask, it’s unlikely to work.”
“Grandpa, he’s being tortured every single night,” Leopold pressed. “No matter how wrong he was, he’s still your grandson. Can you really bear to see him suffer like this?”
Another sigh.
“Larissa’s birthday is coming up. I’m planning to return for it. I’ll bring it up with her then. I can only say I’ll try. I can’t guarantee she’ll agree to cure him.”
A flicker of hope ignited in Leopold’s eyes. “Grandpa, if you’re the one asking, I know she’ll agree.”
…
Larissa glanced at her secretary. “What is it, Ursa? Why are you so shocked?”
Before Ursa could decide whether to speak, Gustave explained. “Wynn is a former A-lister. Three years ago, right after winning a major acting award, he was in a car accident that nearly killed him.”
“It was a huge story at the time,” he continued. “At first, there was an outpouring of sympathy from his fans. But then someone leaked that the female assistant who died in the crash was his mistress. It turned out Wynn had a long-term girlfriend who had been supporting him behind the scenes. After the scandal broke, his career tanked. He’s practically vanished from the industry.”
Ursa nodded. “Exactly. Director, are you sure you want to cast someone with that much negative baggage?”
“I’m sure,” Gustave said firmly. “In terms of look, temperament, and talent, Wynn is the perfect fit. But of course, the final decision is up to Larissa.”
