Larissa looked at Kiernan, her gaze firm and direct. “Grandpa, you’re asking a question you already know the answer to. Did you really think I wouldn’t be angry at all?”
Meeting her eyes, Kiernan sighed deeply, a hint of helplessness and guilt in his expression. “I know,” he said slowly. “The Judson enterprises are mostly in your hands now. I no longer have the right to ask anything of you. The only reason you’re not furious is because I’m your grandfather.”
“I’m glad you understand,” Larissa said bluntly. “The reason I’m willing to turn a blind eye to you letting Paxton’s family greet you at the airport is because when I first returned to the family, you at least acknowledged me as your granddaughter. You never looked down on me for coming from the countryside. So, I won’t treat you the way I treat them.”
Kiernan was silent for a moment, mulling over her words. He then looked up at her and asked directly, “Larissa, be honest with me. Have you truly decided you will never forgive Paxton and Vivica for as long as you live?”
Without a moment’s hesitation, Larissa replied, “Grandpa, we may not have known each other for long, but you should understand my personality by now. I will never forgive them for what they did.”
Kiernan sighed. “I suppose forcing you to forgive them is asking too much. But I selfishly hope that you might be willing to spare Finley’s life and cure the poison in his system.” He added, “And you don’t have to deny it, Larissa. I know you were the one who poisoned him.”
“I wasn’t planning on denying it this time,” Larissa said with a small smile. “But I should mention, the reason I poisoned him was because the very first time we met, he tried to disfigure my face to avenge Honora.”
Kiernan fell silent again before conceding, “He deserved it.”
A pained, elderly vulnerability crept into his eyes. “But no matter what, Finley is my grandson. I don’t want to see my own grandchild die before me. Larissa, I’m begging you, please let him go. Can you do that for me?”
“So that’s your real reason for coming back,” Larissa said, her smile unwavering.
“Yes,” Kiernan admitted. “Larissa, can you grant me this one final favor?”
It was half-past six by the time they reached the Judson estate. It was late October, and the sun set quickly in Regal City, cloaking the evening in darkness.
Larissa got out of the car first and turned to help Kiernan. Just as he found his footing, Paxton, who had parked right behind them, rushed over.
“Dad, let me help you,” he said with a look of concern.
Kiernan, however, brushed his hand away. “My precious granddaughter is helping me just fine. I don’t need you.”
Paxton retracted his hand, his face a mixture of embarrassment and resentment.
