After a pause, Kiernan added, “Actually, if the Palmers don’t mind that Honora is only our adopted daughter and are willing to proceed with the marriage, it doesn’t necessarily have to be you.”

Honora’s expression grew tense.

Larissa just smiled. “It’s alright, Grandpa. I’m willing.”

Kiernan frowned, asking her one more time. “Are you sure?”

“I’m sure,” Larissa confirmed.

Vivica looked visibly pleased. She had expected a lengthy argument, but the matter of having Larissa marry Haskell in Honora’s place was settled without any effort at all.

“It seems this daughter of mine knows her own worth,” she thought. “Marrying Haskell is the best she can hope for.”

Kiernan, unsure what his granddaughter was planning, decided to finalize the matter. “Alright. In that case, it’s settled. I will speak with the Palmer family before the engagement party to clarify the situation. In the meantime, you should spend some time with Haskell, get to know him.”

“Of course, Grandpa,” Larissa said with a smile.

After Kiernan left, Leopold sneered, “Larissa, with your background, marrying a cripple like Haskell is still a step up for you. If he weren’t disabled, you wouldn’t even have a chance.”

“I don’t know…” Honora said, feigning concern. “Neville and Sapphira will be angry…”

She knew she was no longer the true heiress. If she deliberately upstaged Larissa, her aunt and uncle’s anger would be the least of her worries. She was more afraid of displeasing their grandpa.

But Vivica just waved a hand dismissively. “Who cares? If we can make them angry, all the better! Honora, do as Leopold says. At that party, you must crush that little brat and show her who the real princess of the Judson family is!”

A hint of venom and resentment crept into Vivica’s eyes. The memory of how her own daughter had disrespected her the day before, even giving her some kind of medicine that left her throat sore all night, made her teeth grind.
