“Oh?” Larissa was surprised.

“What, did you forget?” Haskell said, his tone serious. “Last night you said you wanted to meet them. I went to see them all personally right after I saw you today.”

The “oh” had been one of surprise, not forgetfulness. She hadn’t expected him to act so quickly.

“I remember,” she said, rubbing her nose. “I just didn’t think you’d be in such a hurry. We said we’d think about it after my birthday party, and you have so much going on right now with your brother and Thatch.”

“It’s not about being in a hurry,” Haskell replied. “When it comes to you, Larissa, everything is important.”

His directness always got to her. She couldn’t help but smile. “Alright, then. What did your friends say?”

“They said they’re all very eager to meet the famous Ms. Judson in person,” he chuckled.

Larissa paused. “Were they at our engagement party?”

“They were,” Haskell confirmed. “But you were the center of attention, so you probably didn’t notice them. They understood.”

“I feel a little bad about that,” she admitted. “Well, at my birthday party, I’ll have to make sure I meet them properly.”

She glanced at the two sleeping creatures on her pillow. They were sleeping so soundly.

“I grew up around venomous creatures,” she explained. “Besides the villagers, most kids were too scared to get close to me. They respected me, but they didn’t see me as a friend. But I never felt lonely. I had too much to learn, too much to do. I never had time for complicated relationships.”

It was why Torrin had felt so neglected, so unappreciated. It was also why, if it hadn’t been for treating Haskell’s legs, she wouldn’t have had much time for him either. In the two months she’d been back with the Judson family, they hadn’t gone on a single real date, let alone had time to meet friends. The initial suggestion had just been a casual remark.

“Maybe you just think you don’t have friends,” Haskell said gently. “Someone as exceptional as you… I’m sure many people would love to be your friend. Avril tells me all the time how happy she is to know you. She said she’d love to be your friend, but she feels she isn’t worthy.”
