“Help me!”
Despite Vivica’s desperate cries, the car didn’t slow down. It sped past her and disappeared into the night. Fearful that her captors might be chasing her, she didn’t dare linger. She pressed on, following the dark ribbon of asphalt.
There was very little traffic at this hour. Twenty agonizing minutes later, she saw another pair of headlights approaching. She waved her arms again, shouting with what little strength she had left.
“Help me!”
But just like the first car, this one drove by without stopping.
Vivica glanced back into the darkness. She couldn’t afford to waste any more time. She had to keep moving.
...
Meanwhile, Finley had arrived back in Regal City. He had his own apartment and wasn’t staying with Leopold, so after getting home, he sent his brother a quick text.
[I’m back in Regal City.]
Remembering what Leopold had said about their mother not being home, he sighed and dialed Vivica’s number. As expected, it went straight to voicemail. He was too exhausted to worry about where she might be. He took a quick shower and fell into bed.
But despite his bone-deep weariness, sleep wouldn’t come. He tossed and turned, his mind racing.
Giving up, Finley picked up his phone. Instead of messaging Larissa, he texted Hazel, a former colleague at Starlight Media with whom he’d kept in touch.
[How are things at the company?]
What he really wanted to ask was how Larissa was doing.
A reply came back a few minutes later.
Suddenly, a car that had just passed her slowed, stopped, and reversed until it was beside her. The window rolled down.
A woman with a cool, composed expression held up her phone, looking from the screen to Vivica as she dialed a number.
Vivica stared at the woman in the car and swallowed hard, her eyes shining with renewed hope. She was saved.
...
In the middle of the night, Larissa was jolted awake by her ringing phone. She opened her eyes, saw Nightveil’s name on the screen, and knew it had to be important.
“Boss,” Nightveil’s voice was crisp and professional, “we’ve found Vivica. It looks like she was held captive and abused. She’s rail-thin and filthy. Given the circumstances, I thought it was important enough to wake you.”
Larissa was now fully awake. “Bring her in. I’ll see her tomorrow morning.”
