Livia’s eyes welled with tears as she shot back, “You have the nerve to ask me that? I know what happened at Neverending Night. You slept with Honora, didn't you?”
Her words caught Lucius off guard, and some of his anger subsided. “So, that’s why you’ve been ignoring me? It’s not because my family is in trouble and you’re planning to abandon me?”
Livia scoffed. “Is sleeping with Honora not a big deal?”
Lucius stared at her, then let out a cold laugh. “…It is. Of course, it is.”
He released her wrist. “So what do I have to do to make you forgive me? Kill Honora?”
The casual way he spoke of murder sent a chill down Livia’s spine, but she kept her composure and sat up. “Lucius, you’re tainted. Nothing you do can fix this. It’s over between us.”
Tainted? How dare she use that word on him!
He seized her chin. “Livia, don’t push your luck. A man of my status could have ten Honoras, and you’d be expected to tolerate it. In fact, since we announced our engagement, I haven’t touched another woman. You should be grateful.”
Grateful? Yes, for a powerful man to be faithful, perhaps she should be. If she actually loved him, she might have been.
But she had never loved Lucius. Being sent to his bed by her father to please him had never been her choice. The engagement had been a surprise, one she accepted not to help her father, but to use Lucius to get rid of her half-brother, Theon.
But Lucius had never respected her. In the end, it was Larissa who had helped her deal with Theon. There was no reason to keep up the charade.
“No. If I didn’t love you, I could turn a blind eye. But it’s precisely because I love you that I can’t tolerate any stain on our relationship. You can’t force me to accept this.”
Seeing her defiant expression, Lucius asked again, “Are you using Honora as an excuse to leave me because you think my family is going down, or are you genuinely upset that I slept with her?”
“Take care, Mr. Lincoln,” Damon called out, unsure of what had just happened.
Livia sat up, smoothed her disheveled hair, and wiped her mouth with a tissue. She looked coolly at her father as he re-entered the room.
“Antagonizing Lucius at a time like this? Are you trying to get yourself killed?” Damon scolded.
“Are you worried he’ll kill me, or that he’ll bankrupt the company?” Livia retorted with a cold smile.
She pulled out her phone, opened Twitter, and typed a new post: [My engagement to Lucius Lincoln has been called off.]
She hit send.
