Chapter 144
Theo
:
Liam’s howl pierces the air, like a beast raining down from the heavens.
He might as well be.
Every hair on my body rises.
“He sounds fucking pissed,” Kade says.
“Guess that explains what took so long.”
For half a second, relief punches through the tension coiled inside me.
Thank goodness.
They’re safe.
Ronan howls an answering call.

I look around, and the lust for blood in the clearing makes my wolf rise in excitement.
We surge forward as one.
Boots pound dirt. Branches snap beneath our feet as we descend toward the citadel, ready to take the war into our hands, to twist and turn the tides. To reverse the corner they backed us into.
My wolf pushes hard against the inside of my skin, ready to paint the ground with the Assembly members’ blood.
The stone walls of the citadel come into view through the trees, dark and jagged against the moonlight.
My senses ring just as warriors emerge from the shadows on the property. Elliott’s wolf slams into a warrior on the right, tearing into him in a feral, unhinged way.
Gods, there is something wrong with that wolf.
An arrow whizzes past my face.

Chapter 144
Fuck. Hunters.

Now all the pieces are making sense. The reason why the Assembly was using Hunter weapons. They aren’t
borrowing techniques from them; they are working with them.
I shift out my claws, ducking a haymaker a warrior sends my way. Spinning on my heel, I kick him in the stomach,
creating the distance I need to land a double knee in the chest. When he drops, I arch my claws down, sinking into
his throat, closing and tearing through flesh.
I tumble forward as I’m kicked in the back and quickly turn. A huge bastard lumbers forward and cracks me on the
head so hard my head snaps to the right.
My world tilts on its axis for a couple of seconds.
Moving to the back at the last second, I managed to avoid another sledgehammer-like blow.
Fucking Grimm.
Relying on my speed, I duck and weave, moving in and out of range. Switching between combinations of punches,
knees, and kicks, I work on breaking him down. I grunt as he catches me in the stomach, but uses the opening to
land an iron kick to the weak point of the knees.
He buckles, and I jump on the advantage, slamming my elbow into his temple again and again until I hear the crack
of bone.
He drops.
I work through two more before I look around and see that there are no more warriors coming.
I look across the field at Dex. “This seems too easy?”
“Entirely,” Dex grunts.
A harsh, grating sound screeches, rusty hinges buckling as a massive entrance opens, and a familiar set of dark curls peaks out as Felix braces himself against one side of the door.
Shit. He’s a fucking mess.
Blood and dirt are matted all over the skin I can see; his color is pale, and his t-shirt sticks to his skin in places. I’m sure it’s not sweat based on the coper tang mixed in with his scent. One eye is swollen nearly shut.

Chapter 144
Dex is by him in an instant. “What the hell happened?”
Felix waves him off, then turns to us. “Well, get the fuck in, we’re on a time crunch.”
We pile in, noting the dead bodies scattered along the path.

“You guys were working,” Kade says.
“I don’t know if you noticed, but the Assembly made new friends, and so did we.”
As I’m trying to figure out what the hell he means by that, I see Aria, and beside her, the fucking Hunter we sold the
house to. Her braid is half undone, clothes streaked with dirt and blood, expression cold enough to freeze hell over.
But it’s her eyes, bloodshot as if she’s been crying, yet burning, blazing, with an inferno, a fire as bright as the
flames she can conjure.
Ronan snarls when he spots the human, charging at him without hesitation, then jerking ot a dead halt when Aria
steps in front of the Hunter.
“Ronan, no. Ransom is with us,” Aria says.
“With us? He’s a fucking hunter,” Ronan growls.
