The challenge is on my tongue, but before the words can leave my lips, Aldren lets out a snarl that sends the

warriors and hunters charging.

My allies meet them in a chaotic clash of wolves and human skin.

Aldren slinks back like a rabbit, allowing the surrounding fighting to obscure him from view.

Sound tunes down, lowering until all I hear is the beating of hearts and adrenaline. I surge forward, letting go of my human skin and shifting into my stronger Alpha wolf.

A hunter’s arrow grazes my wolf’s shoulder, and I turn on him with a snarl. Jumping up on my wolf’s hind legs, I use

my wolf’s weight and size to knock him down. The bow skitters across the floor. The hunter cries out, shielding his

throat with a forearm. My wolf bites down, sinking his teeth into muscle and bone.

His agonized cry made the blood roar hotter in his ear.

Ransom crashes down beside me, a warrior on top of him snapping as his throat around a long wooden stick the

human was using to keep distance.

My wolf was about to intervene when Elliot’s wolf ripped him off by the scruff of the neck, hurling him to the side.

“I didn’t ask for your help, dick,” Ransom grunts, rolling to his feet.

Elliott’s wolf snorts before plowing into the warrior with a psycho look in his eyes.

I turn back to the center of the courtyard, tracking that fucking disease, while keeping my eyes on the battle. We were holding our ground, but I know that the sooner I get to Aldren, the safer everyone will be. They will be forced to stand witness to the challenge and temporarily cease the fighting.

An Assembly warrior rushes me, silver blade raised.

I sidestep and swipe out at his wrist with a paw.

Bone snaps.

He screams. And without hesitation, I end him.

Behind me, Liam barrels through two hunters like a damn freight train. He’s in his hybrid form, and the terror in the

Hunter’s eyes causes his beast to let out one of those haunting howls.

His massive curved claws dig into the neck of one of the Hunters, ripping it clean off as if he were tearing a piece of

paper.

I run around the macabre scene.

Three hunters move toward Felix near the stairwell.

Felix looks like hell. Pale, fresh blood stains his side, but he still fights like a wildcat. He ducks beneath a blade and

drives his shoulder into one hunter.

“Seriously?” Felix snaps breathlessly. “Three against one? Feels fucking rude.”

A hunter raises a silver dagger behind him and immediately crumples to the ground as Dex crashes into the bastard.

“You’re lucky I don’t rip your fucking spine out,” Dex growls, pinning the man to the stone.

His wolf surges through him, half-shifted and terrifying. The hunter doesn’t even have time to scream.

To my right, Kade shifts between his human and wolf form as he attacks and defends. He tears through the battlefield, blood coating his arms while his wolf prowls close beneath the surface.

Hazel stands behind him, and she launches a blade at a wolf, hitting him between the eyes.

Another warrior roars in anger and runs at Kade. One of our wolves intercepts and catches the attacker by the throat, wrenching him off his feet.

Rounds spark as they’re fired right at them.

My wolf moves to shield them, taking them both down with my mass.

The bullet embeds into my shoulder.

Fuck.

Pain explodes through me. The acidic smell of searing flesh and the electric sting of silver hit my system like a

lightning strike.

God’s damned silver.

My wolf snarls violently.

I focus on the wound and try to move. I jerk, agony making my spasm at the movement.

My panic skyrockets.

There is no exit wound.
