Stella took a slow breath and said nothing more.
Everyone was different.
She knew she could never tolerate a life like Ivy’s.
“Evan probably won’t let you leave Seaborne anytime soon either, will he?” Ivy asked.
Stella remained silent.
“Your brother really is a bastard,” Ivy continued. “I always knew he was difficult, but I never imagined he’d treat his own sister this badly.”
Whenever Aaron came up, disappointment entered Ivy’s voice.
Stella, however, had no desire to discuss him.
“Sweetheart, did you cook again?”
Amos’s voice came from behind them.
Ivy paused and turned around.
“Stella said my cooking is delicious. Clearly, there’s something wrong with your taste buds.”
She had always assumed she was the problem.
No matter what she made, Amos claimed it tasted terrible. After hearing it so often, Ivy had genuinely started to believe she could not cook.
But Stella liked the food.
That proved Amos was the problem.
Amos walked over and slipped an arm around Ivy’s shoulders.
“Why are you talking about that man again?”
He had overheard her mention Aaron.
Truthfully, he hated hearing Aaron’s name, especially from Ivy.
“I only said he was a bastard. It wasn’t anything else.”
“You wanted to say something else?”
Jealousy was unmistakable in his voice.
Stella felt a headache coming on.
She had completely lost her appetite, so she quickly made an excuse and left.
Ivy had not said much, but Stella understood the message.
Now that she was in Seaborne, leaving would not be easy.
First, it had been Hogarth Castle.
Now it was this place.
Win her back?
“If that’s what you’re planning, save your energy. Once I’m done with someone, I don’t go back.”
Evan’s chest tightened.
He knew.
He had always known exactly what kind of person Stella was.
He also knew that once he lost her, getting her back would be nearly impossible.
Back in Harbor City, she had still screamed and fought with him.
Now, convincing her to turn around and choose him again would be far harder.
“What am I supposed to do, then?” Evan asked. “Because I’m going to win you back.”
He could no longer worry about pride.
Amos had told him to be patient and coax her.
But as far as Evan was concerned, shameless persistence was the only thing that might work.
Only by refusing to let go could he keep himself tied to her life.
“Then you’re destined to be disappointed,” Stella replied.
