How could there possibly be the kind of chance Evan was talking about?
That possibility was nothing more than something he was clinging to for comfort.
“Enough,” Evan snapped.
Hearing Yara tell him to accept that Stella was dead finally made him lose his temper.
He didn’t want to accept it.
Right now, he refused to accept anything that confirmed her death.
Something had been wrong with Felix that day.
Something had been wrong with the way Jack handled everything too.
By the time they arrived, all they had seen was what was left behind.
Evan believed Felix had taken her away.
No.
It wasn’t even suspicion anymore.
Deep down, he had already convinced himself that was what happened.
“You’re really going to get yourself killed!” Yara cried.
Her voice grew sharper, panic slipping through.
If Evan went up against a madman like Aaron, he didn’t stand a chance.
“That wouldn’t be so bad,” Evan said. “Maybe then she’d come claim my body.”
Even if he died, he still didn’t want to sever every last connection between them.
Yara stared at him. “Do you really think she would?”
Evan fell silent.
No.
He knew better than anyone that she wouldn’t.
Even if Stella were still alive, would she really come back just because she heard he was dead?
Of course not.
If she really had escaped that day, there was a good chance she had even kept Aaron in the dark.
But Evan still missed her.
“And what about Fiona, Mom, and Dad?” Yara pressed.
She didn’t want Evan going up against Aaron.
So before Aaron could personally reach Seaborne, she wanted Evan to end this while he still could.
But the moment Evan heard those words, his chest tightened again.
Another choice.
No matter how many times he tried to escape it, everything always came back to the same thing.
Choosing between them.
It was unbearably cruel.
All these years, it seemed like he had constantly been forced to choose between the Wright family and Stella.
Yara left too.
Once Evan was alone, shadows seemed to swallow him whole.
Once again, the choice between the Wright family and Stella had been placed mercilessly before him.
His thoughts spiraled into another agonizing struggle.
And this time, the decision felt harder than any he had faced before.
Especially when he imagined that Stella might still be alive somewhere, watching him.
That thought alone was enough to tear him apart.
...
Far away, in the small town near Sima Mountain, Felix and Stella were together.
It was still bitterly cold outside.
Nearly two feet of snow covered the ground.
If Stella had been healthy, she probably would’ve already rushed outside to play in it.
But she couldn’t.
The injuries to her legs still hadn’t healed.
And her shoulder blade still hurt even now.
Felix had made sure she received the best medication and treatment available, but an injury was still an injury.
Even once the wounds healed completely, her body might never return to exactly the way it had been before.
