So in Evan’s opinion, if Leon hadn’t already fallen too deeply for Jennifer, now was the best time to walk away.
Leon went silent on the other end of the phone.
His breathing grew heavier.
Back in Harbor City, Evan had told him to let go once before.
Hearing the same words again now clearly irritated him.
“Evan.”
“If you find her, you’re only going to run into more problems. Trust me.”
And if Leon couldn’t handle those problems, they would only hurt him more.
Wasn’t that exactly what had happened between Evan and Stella?
They had fought through everything to be together.
And in the end?
He still hadn’t protected Stella.
He had let her suffer far too much.
Looking back now, Evan finally understood something.
If Stella hadn’t suffered so many unbearable wrongs at the hands of the Wright family, why would she have cut them off so completely in the end?
Her mother’s death had only been the final trigger.
“If you can’t protect Jennifer completely, then stop looking for her.”
And by completely, he meant keeping Jennifer from constantly clashing with the Redson family.
Because the moment they came into contact, conflict was inevitable.
And the Redson family’s attitude toward Jennifer was even worse than the Wright family’s attitude toward Stella had once been.
Leon fell silent again.
Protect her completely?
Could he?
Evan continued, “Ask yourself. Can you really protect her from everything? One incident involving Monique was enough to drive her away.”
“And that was only the beginning. There’ll be plenty more after this.”
Leon’s voice hardened. “You know what things are like between Monique and me.”
The second Monique came up, irritation surged through him.
Why was this so damn hard to explain?
Jennifer didn’t understand.
