Just as Stella had suspected, Evan had begun to seriously doubt that she was dead.
And even with nothing more than suspicion to go on, he still refused to sign the divorce papers.
But he seemed to have forgotten one thing.
Aaron could be absolutely ruthless.
He had given Evan exactly one day.
Once that deadline passed, whatever came next would be brutal.
Evan’s phone rang, pulling him out of his tortured thoughts.
It was Leon.
He answered. “What?”
Ever since Amos had taken Ivy and left, Evan barely even had anyone to talk to.
Not that he and Leon had much to say to each other anymore.
Ever since Evan left Harbor City, their lives had gone in completely different directions.
Even the things they cared about now were different.
The old topics between them no longer seemed relevant.
So when Leon suddenly called, Evan had no idea what he wanted.
All Evan knew was that he had too much bottled up inside and nowhere to put it.
Leon’s voice came through the phone, carrying an unusual trace of sadness.
“Is it true?”
Evan frowned. “Is what true?”
“What happened to Stella. Is she really dead?”
The death of the Hogarth family’s young heiress had naturally caused a huge stir.
At first, Leon had practically taken pleasure in the news.
After all, Stella had caused the Redson family plenty of trouble not long ago. He had hated her for it.
But he had forgotten one very important thing.
Stella was the one who knew where Jennifer was.
At first, Leon had thought that with Stella dead, no one would be protecting Jennifer anymore.
Finding her should have become easier.
Instead, he couldn’t find her at all.
He had searched everywhere he could think of, but Jennifer had vanished without a trace.
And now Leon was panicking.
For the first time, he actually found himself hoping Stella was still alive.
Sure, Stella probably wouldn’t have willingly told him where Jennifer was.
A bitter sense of irony swept through Evan.
Leon had really found his own punishment.
Back when things between Evan and Stella were at their worst, Leon had once joked that Stella was Evan’s karma.
If Evan had married some wealthy heiress his family approved of, he never would’ve been caught between his family and the woman he loved.
But no.
He had chosen the one woman the Wright family could never accept.
And now look at Leon.
Had he forgotten all those jokes he used to make?
Because he had gone and found his own karma too.
Jennifer had turned his life and the entire Redson family upside down.
“You should let her go,” Evan said quietly.
Did Evan regret everything?
Of course he did.
But when it came to love, regret didn’t mean he could simply let Stella go.
Now he suspected she might still be alive.
But even if she truly were dead, the marriage that had never formally ended still felt like the last thing he had left of her.
