Chapter 167
She vaguely remembered the phone vibrating. The kind of noise that was annoying enough to ruin your sleep.
She kicked Jennifer awake, then rolled over and went straight back to sleep. After that, everything had been a blur.
Jennifer yawned. “I’m exhausted. That bastard Evan.”
“He called?”
“Of course he did. Once he found out you were never taken in, he kept asking where you were.”
Stella: “…”
Where she was?
And when he couldn’t find out, he probably blamed Felix again.
Typical.
She picked up her phone and glanced at it. A string of calls from unknown numbers filled the screen.
They had started around one in the morning and kept coming until half an hour ago.
They were probably all from Evan.
Just as she was thinking that, Lucas’s number came in,
Stella answered. “Hello.”
“It’s me.”
Evan’s voice came through the line.
Stella: “”
She curled her lip and was about to hang up.
But before she could pull the phone from her ear, Evan’s hoarse voice came again. “Where are you?”
His voice was not just hoarse. It sounded exhausted too.
Stella said flatly, “Not in a holding cell. And I don’t need you to come get me out.”
Her tone was calm.
So calm that it almost sounded like she did not care at all about his attitude yesterday.
And that calmness only made Evan feel emptier.
“L…”
Stella cut him off. “Whether what I did was right or wrong isn’t for you to judge. And it’s not for you to decide whether I should suffer for it either.”

Evan
Her words made it even harder for him to breathe.
“Where are you?” he asked again. “I’ll come pick you up.
This time, there was a trace of panic in his voice.
It was obvious that even though he had acted that way yesterday, he had never intended for her to find out.
Stella said, “You must be disappointed. You didn’t get to see me lower my head to you.”
“No.”
“Or maybe you’re disappointed you didn’t get to prove that without the Wright family, I’m nothing?”
Evan: “…”
Stella said nothing more.
She hung up.
Things had gotten this bad. There was nothing left to say between them.
She only hoped Evan could see that too.
Jennifer stared at her. “He seriously still has the nerve to call you?”
Did he?
At this point, Stella did not even want to waste words on Evan anymore.
On Evan’s side-
Lucas looked just as sleep-deprived and miserable. Normally, he never got up before nine.
He had already heard late last night how things stood between Evan and Stella, and also that Stella had never actually been taken in. Felix had picked her up halfway there.
୮
So Lucas had not gone to the hospital last night. He had planned to sleep first and visit Evan in the morning.
Instead, Evan dragged him out of bed a little after seven.
Evan lit a cigarette and took one drag after another.
Lucas could not take it anymore. “So… was it actually Stella who poisoned you?”
“No.”
Evan took another drag.
