Jennifer instinctively pushed at Leon.
“What are you doing? Let go of me…”
“Let me listen.”
His voice was soft and gentle, as though he was afraid that speaking too loudly might somehow startle the baby.
Jennifer was speechless.
“It’s only about the size of a blueberry right now. What exactly are you listening for?”
“The size of a blueberry? It’s that tiny?”
The thought of something so small growing inside Jennifer only made Leon feel that the baby was even more miraculous.
But when Jennifer saw the curiosity and anticipation in his eyes, bitterness spread through her chest.
Leon seemed to really like children.
He was already looking forward to this baby.
But could the two of them really give this child a place in their lives?
Seeing the sadness in her eyes, Leon gently squeezed her waist.
“Don’t think so much. You have me.”
Jennifer sniffed but did not answer.
The safer that promise made her feel in that moment, the more deeply it could disappoint her later.
Evan had said the same kind of thing to Stella.
He had promised that he would handle everything.
And in the end, he had only made everything worse.
Maybe people who were pregnant were more likely to overthink things.
Jennifer certainly was.
No matter what Leon said, she somehow found herself thinking of Stella and Evan.
Leon flew Jennifer back to Harbor City himself,
Driving would have taken too long, so he took her straight home by plane.

Once they arrived, he brought Jennifer to his own villa.
She slept almost the entire way.
When she woke up as the car pulled in, she realized Leon was not taking her home.
“Where are we?”
“You’re staying here from now on.”
“No. I want to go home.”
Jennifer answered without hesitation.
What was he thinking?
Everything between them was still so uncertain.
How could she possibly move into Leon’s house now?
Would that not only give the Redson family more reason to look down on her?
“Why go home?” Leon said. “You need someone looking after you right now.”
And after she had gone all the way to Hamilton to end the pregnancy, he could not possibly let Jennifer stay alone anymore.
He needed to keep her close, where he could make sure she was safe.
“I’m pregnant, not made of glass. I don’t need someone taking care of me.”
“Be good.”
Leon simply took her hand and led her inside.
No matter what Jennifer said, he refused to listen.
And he was telling the truth.
He wanted her properly cared for.
In the end, Jennifer was practically dragged into the villa.
There was a housekeeper.
There were staff.
Just as Leon said, she would be well taken care of here.
But Jennifer still was not used to it.
She wanted to stay in her own place.

“I only want to be in my own home.”
“This is your home now.
Leon’s voice was firm.
They had a child together.
And anywhere Leon was, Jennifer belonged there too.
Jennifer looked at him without speaking.
But the reluctance in her eyes was obvious.
