“Even if they had told you, you probably wouldn’t have believed them.”
Just as she did not believe Remi now.
Remi could see the suspicion in Stella’s eyes.
And honestly, she could not blame her.
Anyone would find a story like this hard to believe.
Stella said nothing.
It was true.
She did not believe it.
She simply could not imagine Summer having any connection to General Litt.
“How am I supposed to know you’re telling the truth?” Stella asked. “Did Evan tell you to say all this?”
“You’ll know when Evan comes back tonight,” Remi replied. “Just see how badly injured he is.”
Stella fell silent.
“Here in Seaborne, neither Mr. Hernandez nor your brother could seriously hurt him,” Remi continued. “But General Litt is different.”
“So if Evan comes back badly injured, that proves everything you said is true?”
“You can call your brother right now and ask him.”
Stella said nothing again.
Call Aaron?
“If this is true, why didn’t they tell me from the beginning?”
Why had Felix and Aaron not simply told her that Summer was wanted by an extremely powerful man and could no longer be left in Stella’s hands?
Was that really so difficult to explain?
And honestly, it was not an impossible reason for her to accept.
“Because General Litt has something your brother and Mr. Hernandez want,” Remi said.
“They weighed the risks and decided their interests came first. They probably knew you’d never accept that.”
Stella’s chest tightened.
Their interests.
She had always known Felix was a man who valued power and advantage.
