If General Litt had truly taken Summer under his protection, Stella would never have been able to touch her again.
And knowing Summer, she would have continued flaunting her victory in Stella’s face for the rest of her life.
Whenever the mood struck her, she would call just to mock Stella and remind her that she was still well and alive.
And Felix and Aaron had nearly handed Summer that victory themselves.
“Now that Evan has drawn all the danger onto himself, why don’t you tell me where you are?” Aaron asked. “I’ll send someone to bring you back.”
Stella said nothing.
“Tell me your location.”
“General Litt won’t let Evan walk away tonight, will he?”
Stella had not fully understood everything Remi told her.
But she had understood enough.
Tonight, Evan was facing enemies on three sides.
And Aaron’s response had confirmed it.
Neither Aaron nor Felix intended to back down simply because Evan had drawn the danger away from Stella.
Instead, they would take advantage of the situation.
They would join General Litt in going after Evan while pursuing whatever they wanted from the Black Sea.
Stella remembered what Evan had said while holding her that afternoon.
She had already given up on him long ago.
But she did not want him doing any of this for her.
The weight of it was suffocating.
All she wanted was for the two of them to owe each other nothing.
“And that’s not all, is it?” Stella continued. “You and Felix are going after him too, because you still want whatever is in the Black Sea.”
Aaron remained silent.
“Stella, you’re a Hogarth,” he finally said. “You can’t let your emotions control you every time something happens.”
Stella gave a cold laugh.
“My emotions?”
Was this really about emotion?
Even if Evan were a complete stranger, she could not remain indifferent after he had put himself in danger to protect her.
“He deserves what’s coming to him,” Aaron said.
