Raven

Josh’s grin grew to maniac proportions. “Beautiful isn’t she. The perfect little toy. Deaf and mute. His hand reached out to stroke down the girls arm, and | saw the revulsion in her eyes. She didn’t move though. She stood there like she was locked inside her body.

And I couldn’t imagine the pain and trauma she had been through to be so frightened that she didn’t move.

It took everything I had not to rush to her and drag her to the safety of our side of the room. I didnt move a muscle either though. Anything I did would frighten her now. Because I could tell by her face that she didn’t have a clue who I was.

I just didn’t know if that was a good thing or a bad thing.

“What did you do to her?” Behind me, Gunners’ voices shook with the fury that I was fighting to keep in check. I’d never heard him with so much emotion

before.

There was a chuckle. Which was strange because Josh’s mouth didn’t move. It took me a second to realise that it had been my daughter who had made that sound. Not a laugh or a chuckle but a noise that sounded like a strangled cry. Dampened down by the fishing wire that was currently sealing her mouth

shut.

“Hush now.” Josh consoled her, his fingers sliding up and down her arm. And she hated it. I could see by the terror in her eyes. It made me want to break those fingers one by one. Maybe saw them off nice and slow and make him eat them.

Those fingers had forced untold misery on so many women.

My lips thinned.

“You know it gets worse when you panic.” Josh’s eyes turned back to me. “I thought about sewing up other parts of her body.” He winked like we were partners in some kind of sick joke. “But I knew that you would never forgive me for that.”

I wasn’t going to forgive him for anything. Not for what he had done to Daisy, Lottie and the others. And he sure as hell would not find forgiveness for what he had done to my child.

“Let her go.” I said firmly. He’d said she was deaf, but I didn’t know whether that meant he had taken her hearing or something else. Still I made sure 1 spoke clearly, hoping beyond hope that she would be able to lip read.

“She isn’t part of this.”

Throwing back his head Josh laughed. “She’s your blood Raven. And you took mine from me, it’s only a fair swap.”

ľ

I took a step forward before I could think about it. My fun hand was already raised so the muzzle was pointed directly at his head

“I didn’t take your blood. Your sister came to me. She chose me. It doesn’t matter what you say or do, she will never come back to you.” My eyes flicked towards the girl who looked so much like my ex wife. “This girl ”

“Mairi,” he said, his hand closed around her wrist and her eyes widened.

“What?”

is Maui He said simply. “Although I am thinking of charging that name to something flowery. You took my Darsy from me so i need a

replacement.

“You’re crazy. She isn’t part of this. Kook at her she doesn’t even know who I am. Mairi.” Even saying the name out loud fit wierd My grandmother’s name The one adult in my life who had given a shit about me growing up.

If I didn’t believe she was my daughter before there was no doubt in my head now.

“She’s innocent Josh.”

“Oh I know.” He looked genuinely delighted by the idea. “I did think about breaking her in.” He threw up his hand. “Now don’t look at me like that Raven We both know I can’t actually do it myself.” He motioned to the wheelchair. “My men are pretty good at it although sometimes they can get a little rough Which might be fine for some of the other girls and boys but not for my sweet-” he glanced at her. “What do you think her name should be. Poppy or Rose

I didn’: answer him. Behind me, gunner mumbled something under his breath and I knew that he was losing his battle over his control. At any secrural! expected him to pull that trigger and blow a hole in Josh’s skull. Which would have been great except I needed my daughter cut of the way first.

“Mairi” I said firmly.

He stared at her for a second. And then his shoulders slumped. “God help me.”

My eyes narrowed. What the hell was he on about now? It was like a different person had slid in behind his eyes.

“Prez.”

I ignored Gunner completely. My eyes were fixed on Josh. Waiting for the right time to-

“Go with your father.” He swung his arm forward, the one which was holding her wrist and Mairi stumbled forward.

One step was all it took to pull her out of his grasp and into the safety of my arms. She struggled like a wild cat.

“It’s ok, it’s ok.” I said over and over again. One arm around her and the other with my weapon pointed directly at him. This was it. The moment I could end it once and for all.

But of course she couldn’t hear me. And even if she could I wasn’t sure she was aware enough to comprehend what I was saying.

To her I was just another strange man touching her.

“Prez.” Gunner said again more forcefully. “Sirens.”

That’s when I heard them. And I wasn’t sure how I had missed it before. It wasn’t like they were faint or even in the distance.

“Who called the-”

“I did.” Josh hung his head.

“You did what? When?”

“I am sick Raven.” Hands clasped in his lap Josh made a show of looking contrite. “I know this and I am trying to change. I called them before you got here. It’s the only way I will get the help I need.”
