Chapter 107 Waiting for Nothing

Rebecca lowered her head. Tears kept falling, one drop after another. Her voice shook. “I don’t want anything fancy… I just want a simple life with you. I just want us to be together…”

Her chest felt tight. Every day, she waited for his calls, his texts, for him to come back to their small

apartment.

Her phone never left her hand. Even the smallest notification made her jump.

But again and again, she was let down. Each time hurt a little more. She couldn’t focus on school. She couldn’t focus on work. Her nerves were worn thin.

This was her first relationship. He was her first love.

She once believed all the pain she went through growing up would lead her to a better life.

First, she met Agnes, who helped her so much. Then she met Ethan, who treated her with care and love.

Just when she thought everything was getting better, life played a cruel joke on her.

At some point, Ethan stopped replying as often.

He stopped coming to her apartment.

Little by little, he grew impatient with her. Rebecca carefully chose her words, fearing that she might upset him and face his indifference once more.

This time, it had been a full week. Not a single message from him.

She didn’t want to think badly of him. Even after seeing him getting close with other women, she made excuses for him in her heart.

It must be for work. Just business, she told herself.

As long as he was still with her. As long as he still comes home. She would turn a blind eye.

Ethan stood there with his hands in his pockets. He looked at Rebecca’s tear-streaked face with no emotion. He didn’t even want to look at her.

He scoffed. “Are you serious? A simple life with you? Don’t try to guilt me with that kind of poor-people thinking.

‘I grew up with money. The people around me are all rich or powerful. Why would I live some struggling life with you?

“I’m the only son in my family. Do you think I can just relax? You think rich families get money for free? That’s a joke.”

Rebecca quickly shook her head. “No, Ethan, that’s not what I meant. I’m not asking you to live a simple life with me.

“I mean, we can work hard together. Trust me. I’m trying to make money now. After I graduate, I’ll earn even more. I really will.”

Ethan let out a cold laugh “Work hard? People like you can work all your life and still earn almost nothing.

“Just accept it. You were unlucky. You weren’t born into a rich family.”

Rebecca bit her lip hard. Tears streamed down her face.

“What do you mean? Are you looking down on where I come from? Haven’t I treated you well?”

Ethan shrugged. “It’s not about looking down on you. I’m just tired. I’m annoyed. Just go home.”

Rebecca’s voice trembled. “Didn’t you say you’d treat me well? That we’d get married after graduation?”

Ethan didn’t answer. He scratched his head, already losing patience. Then he lit another cigarette and took a slow drag.

Rebecca frowned when she saw him. “Why are you smoking again? It’s not good for your health. You-”

Ethan suddenly snapped. “Just stop talking! Look at yourself! You act like a nag all day. You question everything and control everything. I’m sick of it!”

His voice got louder, full of anger.

“Ever since I got with you, I’ve had zero space. I’m already tired of you. If it wasn’t for-”

He cut himself off. If it wasn’t because she knew Agnes, if it wasn’t for that bet he made with Duncan, he would’ve dumped Rebecca a long time ago.

Ethan had been thinking about how to break up with her. Now, this was the perfect chance. He could end things and go after Agnes instead.

He took a breath and calmed himself down. Then he looked at Rebecca, who stood there in shock, and spoke in a softer tone.

“Rebecca, I’m sorry. I haven’t treated you well. I keep making you upset. I can’t give you what you want.

ľ

“You deserve someone better. Let’s end it here.”

Rebecca felt like her world collapsed in an instant.

She grabbed his arm, crying as she shook her head.

“Ethan, you want to break up with me? No… please don’t. I won’t ask anymore. I won’t control anything. I’m sorry. I wasn’t saying you were awful. It’s my fault. I asked for too much. I didn’t give you space.”
