Chapter 156 Tell Me the Truth

“Understood, Mr. Newton, Eden said.

It was a bright, sunny morning. The gates of a prison on the outskirts of Grandridge slowly opened.

A thin, worn–looking middle–aged man stepped out. His movements were unsteady. He paused at the entrance and looked around, lost.

A black sedan pulled up. A broad, muscular man got out and walked over.

He took the thin man’s bag, helped him into the car, and they quickly drove off.

Not far away, Agnes sat quietly in another car, watching everything

She recognized the man who had stepped out of the sedan. He had a long scar over one eye.

She remembered him clearly. He was the one who had attacked Rebecca in her apartment, mistaking Rebecca as her.

“Follow that car,” Agnes told her driver.

They trailed the black sedan all the way to a run–down apartment complex. The scar–eyed man dropped the thin man off and drove away.

Agnes stood outside the building for a moment, looking up. Then she went inside.

She knocked on a door on one of the floors. Knock. Khock. Knock.

A middle–aged woman opened the door. She looked confused. “Who are you looking for?” she asked.

The thin man came over from behind her. When he saw Agnes, his expression changed rapidly.

His face darkened. He shoved the woman aside and snapped, “You’ve got the wrong place!”

Then–bang–the door slammed shut.

Agnes didn’t look surprised. From inside, she could hear the man and woman arguing!

She calmly knocked again. Knock. Knock. Knock.

This time, no one answered. Everything went silent.

Agnes didn’t leave. After knocking for a while, she said through the door,

“I can save your daughter.”

After a long time came the sound of a woman crying. Slowly, the door opened.

The thin man stood there, his expression serious. He looked at Agnes with suspicion.

“Long time no see, Larry,” Agnes said. “I heard your daughter’s illness came back. I’m here to help.

Larry Sarratt frowned. “You’d help me? How? What’s your game?”

“Let’s talk inside,” Agnes said. “Too many eyes out here.”

Larry didn’t move. His empty eyes were full of doubt.

Agnes seemed to read him. “I came alone. Don’t worry. I can’t cause any trouble.”

Larry glanced around. No one else was there. Reluctantly, he stepped aside and let her in.

The apartment was small and simple. There were only a few pieces of furniture, but everything was neat. The air smelled like disinfectant mixed with herbal medicine.

A girl’s weak cough echoed from a closed room inside.

The middle–aged woman stood behind Larry, staring at Agnes timidly.

Larry told her to go into the room. He said he needed to talk with Agnes.

The woman obeyed. As she passed Agnes, she lowered her head and whispered, “I’m sorry.”

After she went inside, Larry pulled out a chair. “Sit.”

“Thank you,” Agnes said.

Larry let out a dry laugh. “You’re impressive. We moved all the way here, and you still found me.”

Agnes smiled faintly. “I’ve been keeping an eye on you. You refused to see me in prison, so I had to wait. I didn’t expect you to get out so soon.”

Larry’s face turned pale. He lowered his head and pulled out a cigarette, lighting it with shaky hands.

“You shouldn’t smoke,” Agnes said. “Your daughter’s sick.”

Larry froze. Then he quickly put out the cigarette, rushed to open the window, and waved the smoke outside with his jacket.

He sat back down. “I’m sorry,” he said hoarsely. “I ruined your whole family. I destroyed your mother and you. I can’t face you.”

He swallowed hard. “If it weren’t for my daughter needing money for treatment… if we didn’t need someone to earn… I’d give you my life.”
