Hillary said, “If you want to kill me, I’d be willing to die by your hand”

Raymond sighed. “Hillary, don’t say things like that. Last time, I spoke too harshly. I went too far. I hurt you, and that pushed you to do something out of line. After I sent you back to Montara, I regretted it. I couldn’t stop thinking about you. I even planned to bring you back, but you came on your own. Why didn’t you tell me? Are you still mad at me?”
All the hurt in Hillary’s heart rushed out at once. So he really did care about her.
“No, no,” she said quickly. “I’m not mad at you. I was afraid you’d be mad at me. I was afraid you’d think I’m a bad person. I swear, I only wanted someone to scare Agnes a little, so she’d leave on her own. I didn’t do anything else! Really!”
Her voice trembled.
“She took you away from me. You’re mine, Raymond. We have been together since college. Of course I hate it! I remember everything you ever did for me. You still care about me. You’re just upset about how I left back then.”
Tears streamed down her face. She looked fragile and pitiful.
Raymond gently wiped her tears away.
She leaned into him, pressing herself against his chest, sobbing softly.
“Hey,” he said in a low voice. “Don’t cry. Yes, I did blame you for leaving for another country without a word. Everything I did was to make you feel what it’s like to be abandoned. But after you left, I regretted it. Hillary, come back to me, okay?”
Hillary froze for a second, then lit up with joy.
“Raymond, you mean it? Then… what about you and Agnes….?”
Raymond paused. “My grandmother is still around. I have to think about the family’s reputation. I can’t divorce her yet.

“I understand. I don’t have the right to blame you. You did all this for me. You’ve suffered. That’s why I brought you here and kept you hidden. Helping Agnes… that’s just pressure from the elders. Hillary, you’ll have to bear with it for now.”
“I understand,” Hillary said quickly. “I really do. I’m not afraid of a little hardship. As long as I can stay by your side, I’ll accept anything, Raymond.”
She stepped forward, stood on her toes, closed her eyes, and puckered her lips, trying to kiss him.
Raymond turned his head slightly. Instead, he picked her up in his arms.
Before she could react, he carried her into the bedroom and laid her on the bed.
“Hillary,” he said calmly, “I’ve already arranged a flight for you to Montara. Go back there for a while.

Grandridge isn’t safe for you now. Agnes won’t let you off. She already drove Rebecca and Ursa out of the city. Their outcomes weren’t good. Even though I helped her, she’s still pushing for a divorce. Things between us… it’s time to end them.”
He looked at her.
“Once I deal with everything here, I’ll bring you back. Hillary, we won’t be separated again. Okay?”
At the mention of Rebecca and Ursa, Hillary stiffened. Agnes had that much power?
A chill ran through her. But with her father–and now Raymond–protecting her, she felt less afraid.
“I’ll listen to you,” she said softly. “Just… be careful too. I’ll wait for you.”
Raymond gently patted her head. “Don’t worry.”
Then he stood up, told her to get some rest, and turned to leave.
Hillary suddenly jumped off the bed and hugged him from behind.
“Raymond, don’t go. Stay with me tonight, okay? I’m scared.”
He gently removed her arms.
“I’ve arranged plenty of security. If anything happens, call me. My family is in chaos right now because of Agnes. She’s driven everyone out and now wants a divorce to take the family assets. I just found a little time to come see you.”
He glanced at her. “Be good. Go to Monta

and wait for me.”
He had never touched her. She had tried several times, but he always stayed distant.
Still, their relationship seemed to have thawed. It had even moved forward. That was an unexpected win.
She was satisfied. With Raymond protecting her, she now held a strong card. When she returned to Montara, she would find a way to break free from her father’s control.
