Chapter 98 A Secret Comes Out

Rebecca cried so hard she could barely breathe. Agnes stayed by her side, gently calming her down. It took a long time before Rebecca finally stopped.
“Agnes,” Rebecca said, her voice still shaky, “I’m so happy you’re okay. I wanted to visit you these past few days, but Mr. Newton said you needed rest. He told me to wait, I’ve been waiting until today, and I finally get to see you now.” She sniffled again.
Agnes reached out and wiped the tears from Rebecca’s eyes. “I’m sorry I made you worry.”
Rebecca suddenly stopped crying. She tilted her head and stared at Agnes. “Wait a second, Agnes, you kept this from me for so long! Mr. Newton said you’re his wife. Is that true?!”
Agnes frowned a little. She knew this couldn’t stay a secret forever.
She was already in the middle of divorcing Raymond. Once everything was settled and they had truly gone their separate ways, there would be no reason to mention this relationship anymore.
“I’m sorry, Rebecca,” Agnes said softly. “I really am his wife… I…”
Rebecca suddenly jumped up from the bed, eyes wide in shock. “What?! Agnes, that’s insane! You’re married to Raymond-the heir of the Newton Group? The top family in Grandridge? You’re Mrs. Newton?! Oh my gosh-wow, wow, WOW!”
Seeing how worked up she was, Agnes quickly waved her over. “Hey, sit down. Why are you so excited? I’m not done yet. The reason I didn’t tell you is because we’re about to get divorced. Once it’s over, this relationship won’t matter anymore. That’s why I didn’t think there was any need to bring it up.”
Rebecca jumped up agitatedly. “What?! What did you just say-divorce?! No way! Why would you divorce him? He’s handsome and loaded. If it were me, I’d make the most of it-every way possible!”
Agnes closed her eyes, speechless. This girl was so naive, and she had no filter.
Rebecca quickly sat back down beside her. “So why are you getting divorced? Oh, right! At the WOW Fashion Show last time, Ms. Young, who paid her way to first place, didn’t she say Mr. Newton was her boyfriend? What’s going on there?”
Her eyes lit up. “Wait, I get it now. Someone stole your man! She’s the other woman, right? That’s it! I’ll go deal with that bitch for you!”
Rebecca jumped up again and rushed toward the door, but Agnes grabbed her and pulled her back.
“Rebecca, can you not be so dramatic?” Agnes said. “What exactly are you going to do to her?”
“So we’re just going to let her get away with it?” Rebecca said, upset. “Buying first place was already disgusting. And now she’s openly going after someone else’s husband? That’s just wrong!”
Agnes shook her head slowly. “Our divorce… I don’t think it’s only because of her.”
She didn’t know how things between her and Raymond had ended up like this. Maybe even without Hillary, they would have still reached this point.

Rebecca looked like she didn’t believe her. She leaned in, lowering her voice like it was a secret.
“Agnes, I think it’s because there’s a third person between you and him”
Rebecca went on, “That night, when we couldn’t find you, I could tell how worried Mr. Newton was. The freezer door wouldn’t open. We were all waiting for someone to bring the key.”
She paused, eyes wide. “But he didn’t wait. He tried to pry the door open with his bare hands. It was scary how strong he was. The door started to bend. Then Mr. Ruell came to help him. The two of them forced it open together.
“He was the first one to rush in. And Agnes… you… you…”
Agnes looked at her, confused. “What? What about me?”
Rebecca lowered her voice even more. “You kept calling his name.”
Agnes froze. Her expression changed rapidly. She must have been out of her mind from the cold. Why would she keep calling that man’s name?
“Rebecca, are you sure you didn’t hear it wrong? I wouldn’t… I mean… no way, right?” Agnes said.
Rebecca shook her head firmly. “It’s true! We all heard it. Your voice was soft, but you kept repeating it. And when Mr. Newton got inside, he held you the whole time. He used his body to keep you warm. None of us could even help.”
A strange feeling passed through Agnes’s chest. But she quickly pushed it down. Everything between Raymond and Hillary-she hadn’t forgotten any of it.
Maybe he only did that because he had promised her mother to take care of her. He had admitted that before.
Agnes looked at Rebecca and said calmly, “What you saw might not be what you think. But I’m still grateful he saved me. And all of you too. That night… I really thought it was the end for me.”
Rebecca quickly waved her hands. “Don’t say that! Hurry up, you need to touch wood!”
Agnes laughed softly. “Okay, okay. Here. I’ll touch the wood.”
୮
Rebecca nodded hard. “Agnes, don’t talk like that. You’ve got a long life ahead of you. You’re lucky. Things will get better.”
Agnes tapped her lightly on the head. “You always say the nicest things. With your good luck, we’ll both be fine.”
Rebecca nodded again, but then her head dropped. Her voice turned quiet and guilty.
