Chapter 99 Punishment in Blood

“Take care of yourself” Agires said softly. “That Ethan… I really don’t trust him. This all started because of him.”
Rebecca shook her head, her voice low. “Agnes, we’re sorry. But it’s not all his fault. The day you went missing, he rushed over right away to help. When he found out Lucy hurt you, he felt really bad. He didn’t even dare come see you. Honestly, I think he’s just unlucky, running into someone as extreme as her.”
Agnes looked at her. Rebecca was trying so hard to defend Ethan. The words on Agnes’s lips stopped there. She didn’t say them out loud.
But in her heart, she knew the truth. It was Ethan’s mess. He was fooling around. And now, both she and Rebecca were the ones paying for it.
Rebecca suddenly smiled. “Oh, right! That day, Mr. Ruell was super worried too. I told you before. Do you think he likes you?”
Agnes waved her off. “No way. We’re just friends. You’re overthinking it again. Why do you think everyone likes me? You’ve got a crush on me, or what?”
Rebecca burst out laughing. “Hey, that’s because you’re amazing! Not just them—even I’m a fan of yours!”
Agnes laughed too. The two chatted for a while, then Rebecca left the hospital.
Outside, Rebecca felt a strange emptiness in her chest. There was something she hadn’t told Agnes about that night.
She had seen how nervous Ethan was. Maybe she had just overthought it.
But ever since Ethan met Agnes, he kept bringing her up. Sometimes he praised her looks. Sometimes he talked about how capable she was.
Sometimes he would praise Agnes for being pretty. Other times, he would talk about how capable she was. After hearing it so many times, Rebecca couldn’t help but feel a little uneasy. But then she would remember that Agnes had always been there for her, always helping her. The thought made Rebecca feel ashamed.
What’s wrong with me? That’s awful. I shouldn’t feel this way.

In the hospital room, Megan quickly changed the clean pillowcases and sheets while chatting with Agnes.
“Mrs. Newton, you look so much better today!” Megan said with a smile. “You have no idea how worried Mr. Raymond was.”
She kept talking as she worked. “He didn’t sleep for days. He stayed right here with you the whole time. Back then, your hands and feet wouldn’t respond at all. The doctor said you were stuck in that freezer too long. They saved your life, but there was a chance you could be paralyzed.”
Megan let out a soft sigh. “Mr. Raymond massaged your arms and legs himself every day. He even held your hands and feet in his arms to warm them up. And he kept talking to you.”

“He said as long as he was there, he would never let you become paralyzed. And even if the worst happened, he would stay by your side forever. He said he would be your legs.”
Megan shook her head, a little emotional. “I always thought he was cold. But when it came to you, he was so careful. I’ve never seen him like that before. He looked so worn out. He hadn’t even shaved in days.”
Agnes listened quietly. At some point, her eyes filled with tears.
Megan kept talking, not noticing at first. When she didn’t get a response, she looked up and saw Agnes crying. Startled, she hurried over and grabbed a tissue to wipe her tears.
“Huh? Mrs. Newton, why are you crying? Did I say something wrong? Did I upset you? Oh no, don’t cry, you just started feeling better.”
Agnes shook her head quickly. “I’m fine, Megan. Really. I don’t know why. My eyes just feel a little uncomfortable, that’s all.”
Megan looked worried. “Should I call a doctor to check on you?”
“No, no. I’m really okay,” Agnes said, forcing a small smile.
She took a breath and steadied herself, but her heart was in a mess. She wanted to ask Raymond what he was really thinking.
But the moment she thought of Hillary, she held back again.
In a quiet warehouse, a group of tall, strong men stood in neat rows.
In the center, a man in a black suit sat calmly in a chair.
In front of him, a woman collapsed on the ground, crying hard. Her face was covered in tears as she begged again and again.
“I’m sorry! I was wrong! I won’t do it again! Please let me go! I do anything you want! I picked the wrong person. I was blind! Please, spare me! I’m begging you!”
She struggled to crawl forward to reach that man. However, a few men stopped her from approaching. “Please, I’m begging you.”
But the man didn’t react at all. He just sat there, watching her performance like it meant nothing.
The woman finally ran out of strength. She collapsed on the floor, crying weakly. “Please… let me go… I was out of my mind… please…”
The man in the black suit slowly stood up. He took a thick leather whip from one of his men and weighed it in his hand.
Crack! Crack! Crack!
The whip came down hard on her. The woman screamed and tried to crawl away, but no matter where she moved, the whip found her again.
