At the same time, Owen Reynolds’s phone also rang.
It was the head of the registrar’s office, calling to give him Carlson Smith’s exact address.
They both hung up at the same moment and turned to face each other.
“I’ve found it!”
Owen said, “I just checked. The fastest flight to Springfield is at 1 a.m. The bullet train doesn’t leave until tomorrow morning.”
Corley responded immediately, “Then we’ll fly! I’ll arrange for someone in Springfield to have a car ready for us in Deepdale Town. But to get to Carlson's village, Brookvale, a car won't make it. We'll have to find other transportation from the town.”
“Okay.”
After quickly packing, they headed straight for the airport.
There wasn’t much to pack. Owen only had a medium-sized travel bag. Corley traveled even lighter: just his phone, a charger, and his wallet, which held a few credit cards.
That was all he needed.
At 3 a.m., their plane landed at Central Airport in Springfield.
The person Corley had arranged was already waiting outside with the car keys. He took them and motioned for Owen to get in the car.
After a couple of stretches on the highway and about 20 kilometers of winding mountain roads, the two arrived in Deepdale Town at 5:40 a.m.
The sky was still dark.
The streetlights had already been turned off.
The small town was quiet, with hardly any lights on in the houses.
Owen, in the passenger seat, pulled two pieces of bread from his bag. He kept one and handed the other to Corley. “Here. It’s not much, but it’ll have to do.”
Corley took it and had a few bites. “…This is awful. Hard as a rock.”
Despite his complaints, he finished the whole thing.
Just then, a message notification sounded from Owen’s phone. He casually picked it up and his eyes widened.
“It’s Roseanne!”
Corley immediately leaned over. “What did she say?”
“She said she, Mamie, and Scales are at Carlson Smith’s house, and the phone signal is terrible… Carlson’s family is in trouble… Two men came to their house yesterday and almost started a fight… They’re coming back today… She’s asking me to help them think of a solution…”
The situation Roseanne described in her message matched what they had found out.
