Chapter 706 He’s Jealous
Draven was carr
ming, greaseproof paper parcel. He walked straight over to Scarlet the moment he stepped through the door, his voice softening. “A new pastry shop jus opened outside the palace’s south gate, and their specialty is honey cake. I bought you some while it was still Box. Give it a try?”
Taking the parcel from him. Scarlet smiled. “How are you back so early today?”
“I couldn’t stop thinking about you, so I came over,” Draven said, his eyes casually drifting over toward. Leander
Standing nearby, Leander watched the two of them chatting so intimately, and his jaw tightened involuntarily.
It was no secret in Vanelle that Draven had feelings for one of Elowen’s maids. Leander also knew that Draven had defied his parents‘ wishes by insisting on marrying Scarlet, a choice that had earned him a severe beating from his father. Leander had assumed Draven was just being impulsive and would eventually regret it.
Yet looking at the sheer tenderness in Draven’s eyes now, and the unblemished joy on Scarlet’s face, Leander suddenly felt that his own preoccupation with social status and respectability was utterly trivial compared to what they had.
The realization irritated him. Unable to help himself, he spoke up coldly, “Mr. Hall, you usually have so many duties to attend to. What brings you back so early today? Don’t tell me that falling in love has made you neglect your work. If so, I’m afraid you’re failing to repay His Majesty’s trust.”
Elowen arrived at the entrance just as Leander spoke./Hearing his harsh words, she paused in her tracks.
Beside her, Mira caught the petty undertone immediately and couldn’t help but whisper, “Leander is being incredibly out of line.”
“Because he’s jealous,” Elowen corrected her gently.
Mira let out a soft huff. “Should you go in and help Draven, Your Grace? He’s a military man; he might not be able to outtalk a court official.”
Elowen smiled. “No need. Draven can handle this just fine.”
Mira tilted her head, confused.
“Think about it,” Elowen said. “Whose side did Draven serve on before?”
It clicked for Mira instantly. “His Grace?”
Elowen nodded. “Exactly. He’s served His Grace for so many years. How could he possibly fail to handle a trivial matter like this?”
Inside the shop, Draven remained perfectly calm. “You must have misjudged the situation, Mr. Whitmore,” he replied casually. “His Majesty himself noted that the affection Scarlet and I share is a rare blessing, and he personally granted me the time off to be with my fiancée.”

Sure enough, Leander paled.
“My duties will never be neglected,” Draven continued, “but neither can chsrespect the Emperor’s favor. If you believe I am in the wrong, Mr. Whitmore, you are entirely free to report me to His Majesty–or challenge the propriety of his orders directly.”
Leander clenched his jaw, left utterly speechless.
Charlotte looked back and forth between Leander, Draven, and Scarlet, suddenly realizing she had stumbled upon a massive secret.
Right at that tense moment, Elowen stepped through the door.
Everyone immediately bowed to greet her. Elowen maintained her regal composure, offering a warm smile. “Please, there is no need for such formality. Do carry on with your work and browsing.
With that, her gaze swept across Leander’s face before settling on Draven and Scarlet, her smile deepening. “Draven, I happened to overhear you outside. Since His Majesty gave you special permission to be with your fiancée, Cassian and I agree that, given the deep affection between you two, you should finalize your wedding plans as soon as possible.”
Deep affection. There it was again.
Leander’s face turned completely ashen.
To make matters worse, Elowen turned directly to him. “Mr. Whitmore, you serve in the Ministry of Rites and understand protocol better than anyone. What are your thoughts on Draven and Scarlet’s upcoming marriage?”
Despite every fiber of his being resisting, Leander had no choice but to force the words past his throat. “…I believe,” he managed hoarsely, “that both His Majesty and Your Graces are entirely correct.”
Elowen nodded with satisfaction and turned to Charlotte with a bright smile. “Take your time picking out whatever you like. Your brother is paying today, and he certainly isn’t short on coin.”
Like countless other young women in Vanelle, Charlotte utterly adored Elowen. To have the princess speak directly to her sent a flush of bright red to her cheeks, leaving her unable to do anything but nod and squeak out a breathless, “Alright!”
Charlotte ended up selecting several bolts of fabric and had Leander foot the bill. Heartbroken and now significantly poorer, Leander turned to leave, entirely dispirited.
As he reached the exit, he couldn’t help but pause and look back. Scarlet was deep in conversation with Elowen, neither of them paying him the slightest bit of attention.
