George’s face stiffened, completely at a loss for a valid excuse to refuse. He could only step aside.

The Iron Guard filed inside.

Half of the twenty men remained stationed outside, while the other ten followed their commander into the inn.

The group first checked Maya’s room, asked a few quick questions, and then backed out.

The guards smashed their way in.

Darius kicked the door with brute force, snapping the latch in half. Wood splinters flew as the heavy panels slammed against the wall.

He stepped over the threshold, drawing the curved blade from his waist in one fluid motion.

The nine Iron Guards behind him followed suit. Ten men, ten blades, ten flashes of cold steel, all pointed toward the depths of the room.

The room was unlit, with only the moonlight and the glare of torches from the courtyard bleeding through the paper windows, casting pale, ghostly spots on the floor.

His eyes darted like a hawk’s, sweeping through the shadows.

Instead of seeing anything, he first heard the splashing of water.

Stepping further inside, he was hit by warm, humid steam mixed with a faint, sweet fragrance.

The scent coiled into his nostrils, making his throat inexplicably tight.

Following the scent, he spotted a wooden screen standing at the far end of the room.

The screen was old, its frame yellowed and its paper slightly wrinkled. But right now, that thin sheet of paper displayed the striking silhouette of a woman.

Smooth, rounded shoulders, a slender waist, and a breathtakingly graceful neckline.

He stood rooted to the spot, his face instantly burning a bright red.

Even though he froze, he completely forgot to give any orders.

His highly–strung subordinates couldn’t brake in time, clattering into him in a chaotic pile–up.

The men clutched their noses and rubbed their foreheads, ready to complain.

Looking up and following their boss’s gaze to the silhouette on the screen, their faces flushed crimson one after another.
