George stepped forward. “Miss Dray, let me introduce you.”

He gestured to the young man beside him. “This is Lord Darius, Left Commander of the Iron Guard.”

Elowen tightened her collar and offered a polite curtsy. “Lord Commander.”

Darius’s Adam’s apple bobbed.

He had peeked at her just a second ago, and now he didn’t dare to look again.

He kept his head down, his voice strained. “…Miss Dray.”

Elowen lowered her eyes submissively. “It’s like this, Commander. Lord Whitaker and I have been traveling for days, so I was looking quite a mess. Since we are entering Kingsport tomorrow, I was worried Prince Zachary might be disgusted by my unkempt appearance. That’s why I asked for hot water to freshen up.
