Darius remained silent.

He didn’t dare look at her directly, but as he turned to leave, he stole one last glimpse of the hem of her dress out of the corner of his eye.

Then he whipped around and marched out.

His guards trailed closely behind. The clanking of their armor faded, replaced by the galloping of hooves that eventually dissolved into the dark night.

George escorted them all the way to the inn’s entrance, only breathing a massive sigh of relief when they vanished over the horizon.

Peace returned to the courtyard.

Elowen stood at her door. Once she was certain the horses were gone and the guards weren’t coming back, she wiped that docile look right off her face.

“No wonder you were dead set on taking a bath.”

Thomas stepped out of the shadows, arms crossed, sounding utterly amused.

Elowen tilted her head and shot him a glance.

It was nothing like the soft gaze she had given Darius.

There was no shyness or frailty in it—only cold, crushing dominance, like a predator looking down on its prey.

Her voice was icy. “Now that you’ve seen what I can do, you’d better start listening to me.”

Thomas was taken aback.

She narrowed her eyes. “Today I told you to fetch hot water, yet you had to interrogate me about it. Your foot–dragging almost cost us.”
