By the time we reached the parking area, my chest still felt a little bit tight. Tristan unlocked the car, and I moved instinctively toward the passenger seat.
I reached for the door handle, but before I could open it, Kate spoke.
“Um… Tristan?”
Her voice was soft and hesitant.
We both turned to her.
She shifted her weight slightly and played with her fingers, appearing unsure of what she was about to say.
“Is it all right if I sit in the front?” she asked carefully.
“I just…” she trailed off, her gaze dropping briefly. “After the accident… I don’t think I can sit in the back seat for a little while.
She let out a small, nervous laugh.
“I think I’m a bit traumatized,” she admitted.
There was a pause. I felt Tristan’s gaze on me. He was about to say something, but before he could, I nodded.
“It’s fine,” I said.
I stepped back from the passenger seat and moved toward the back door instead.
“It must have been tough,” I added, offering a small smile.
Kate’s face brightened immediately.
“Thank you,” she said, relief evident in her tone.
I slipped into the back seat, closing the door quietly behind me.
Tristan lingered outside for a second longer than usual. Then he got into the driver’s seat.
The engine started, and the car pulled away from the hospital.

However, in a second, Kate began talking, and there weren’t any signs of stopping.
She talked animatedly, her voice carrying excitement, even though she had just been discharged from the hospital.
“You wouldn’t believe how boring it is in there,” she said, turning slightly toward Tristan. “I think I memorized the cracks on the ceiling at this point.”
“That’s what I always did when you would leave me behind for your meetings,” she added softly.
I pursed my lips and looked out of the window. Tristan didn’t react to her words, but she continued talking about their past experiences with each other.
I sat quietly in the back seat, my hands resting on my lap.
My gaze drifted upward to the rearview mirror. And there, I met his eyes. Tristan was looking at me–not at her.
I looked away quickly.
This feeling-
It was not good.
It was not healthy anymore.
I knew that.
I knew I should not feel like this.
And yet, I couldn’t stop it.
By the time we arrived at her place, I had barely spoken a word.
The car came to a stop, and Tristan got out first.
He walked around to her side and opened the door for her.
“Rest after this,” he said.
She nodded and moved out of the car, her movements slow and careful.
“I’ll just send her to the elevator,” he said to me, gauging my reaction. I nodded again and watched from inside the car as she leaned slightly on him.

I stayed inside the car alone. The silence wrapped around me, heavier than before.
My thoughts piled up one after another until I could barely keep up with them.
I stared down at my hands.
And before I realized it, my vision blurred. A tear gathered at the corner of my eye.
I let out a quiet breath.
This was ridiculous!
I was being ridiculous.
Before the tear could drop from my eyes and down my cheeks, the car door suddenly opened.
I flinched slightly, quickly wiping the corner of my eyes.
“Tristan?” I asked, looking up at him. How come he was back so soon? Did he really just lead her to the elevator and not to her room?
He slid into the seat beside me instead of going back to the driver’s seat.
He closed the door, and for a moment, he just looked at me. It seemed he was reading my mind.
Then, after a few seconds, he flicked my forehead.
“Ow,” I muttered, frowning slightly.
“Don’t overthink it,” he said simply.
“There’s really nothing going on between us,” he continued.
His voice was firm and certain.
I stared at him, searching his face for anything–any hesitation, any doubt.
However, he looked completely sincere.
He reached out then, his hands gently cupping my cheeks. The warmth of his touch made my breath hitch slightly.
“Hey,” he murmured.
Before I could react, he leaned in.
