Chapter 62 War Of Nerves

WILLOW

This was just the cherry on top, huh?

For a moment, I simply stood there near the door. The awkward silence that followed stretched so long that it began to feel physically uncomfortable.

Fortunately, Roccobless his quick thinkingstepped in a few seconds later. He cleared his throat and stepped forward with a polite smile.

Marcus,he said smoothly, this is Miss Willow. Miss Florence’s new secretary.”

Secretary?Marcus repeated, sounding stunned.

I kept my expression calm, even though internally I was screaming.

Rocco chuckled lightly, rubbing the back of his neck in a very convincing display of casual awkwardness.

I thought you wouldn’t be able to make it today,he added, glancing at me.

I gave him a small apologetic look, silently thanking him for playing along.

Anyway,Rocco continued, recovering quickly. He walked closer to where I was and patted my shoulder in comfort. She’s the representative of Miss Florence, so we can start the meeting.

I could feel Marcus’s eyes burning holes into my face. Meanwhile, Serena was observing me with thinly veiled curiosity, even tilting her head in the process.

I stepped forward slowly.

I can do it on my own, Rocco,I told him quietly.

He blinked in surprise.

Are you sure?he whispered.

Don’t worry,I said softly.

Then I winked. It’s nothing I can’t handle.”

He still looked hesitant, as though debating whether he should stay and act as a buffer. But after a moment, he nodded.

Alright,he said. With that, he stepped aside, nodding at me one more time before leaving my office.

Without Rocco by my side, the room felt much larger. However, I silently let out a deep breath to calm myself down. I finally turned to face Marcus and Serena fully. Marcus still looked stunned. Serena, however, was barely holding back a smirk.

I sighed internally before offering them a professional smile.

You’re here for a business proposal, right?I said.

You’re really the secretary?he asked, still unable to let go of the previous topic.

Yes,” I replied calmly. Then I gestured toward the seating area.

Anyway, let’s get straight to business.

Unfortunately, they did not get straight to business.

The moment we sat down, Serena leaned slightly forward in her chair, her expression suddenly soft and sympathetic. I nearly clapped, impressed by the empathy she was emanating.

I only recently found out you two were married, she said gently. In fact, I only knew about it when you saw Marcus and me that morning.

Marcus shifted slightly beside her but said nothing.

I’m sorry about that,she continued.

Don’t worry.

I pursed my lips.

It’s over.

Serena’s eyes brightened.

Right?she exclaimed enthusiastically.

The two of you got a divorce, right? Marcus told me.

She leaned back casually.

That means this should be smooth sailing.”

Something about the way she said that made my stomach twist.

We already have shares in this company, she continued, crossing one leg elegantly over the other. So I’m helping Marcus get signed with you.”

Her smile widened slightly. I hope this doesn’t get between us.

Marcus remained silent beside her.

He looked thoughtful and cautious. Then, he finally spoke.

You’re not going to be petty about this, are you? You’re not going to let our divorce get in the way of this deal with Fiorane?

I raised an eyebrow.

I’m not like you,I said evenly.

Besides,” I added, crossing my arms, it’s not me who will make the decision.”

I tilted my head slightly.

It’s Miss Florence.

Right,Marcus muttered quietly.

He nodded to himself as if that somehow reassured him.

Present your proposal,I said simply.

Finished

Marcus cleared his throat before opening the folder he brought. Then he began explaining their proposal.

I listened carefully and professionally.

However, the more that I listened, the more the truth came out. It was not nearly as good as Tristan’s proposal from beforenot even close.

Tristan’s presentation was well thought out. I could tell he took his time before he appeared. On the other hand, Marcus’s proposal felt rushed.

When he finally finished, Marcus closed the folder and looked at me expectantly.

So,he said.

That’s it.

Serena smiled brightly beside him.

You should relay it well to Miss Florence, she added. Marcus did a good job explaining everything

I pursed my lips slightly. Of course,I said.

I stood up slowly. I had already heard enough.

If I stayed in this room any longer, I might actually lose my patience.

I’ll pass the proposal along,I said politely. Then I began walking toward the door. I’ll escort you to the elevator.

However, just as I reached the door, Serena’s voice stopped me.

Oh!

I paused.

Marcus and I are actually going to a King event tonight, she said casually.

I slowly turned back.
