Chapter 64 Someone’s Late

WILLOW

I arrived at the event by myself.

If I had already committed to this ridiculous plan, then I might as well follow through with it.

The cab ride there had been strangely quiet. The driver had turned on the radio, some soft pop music playing in the background while the city lights passed by outside the window. I spent the entire ride staring out at the streets, already thinking it was a mistake.

However, my pride had already carried me this far. Backing out now would be worse.

When the cab finally stopped, I stepped outand immediately realized that the venue they were talking about was a yacht in the middle of the city.

I stood there on the dock, staring at the massive yacht illuminated with golden lights. Music pulsed faintly from the upper deck, and I could already hear laughter and chatter drifting through the air.

I adjusted my bag over my shoulder before walking toward the entrance ramp. The moment I reached the dock, someone approached me.

Hey there.”

I turned slightly and found a tall man smiling at me confidently. He was dressed well, probably in his late twenties, and looked like someone who had spent a lot of time in gyms and mirror selfies.

First time here?he asked. Want me to show you around?

I smiled politely.

Sorry,I said. Not interested.

Then I walked away before he could respond.

I had only taken three steps when I heard him chuckle softly behind me.

Your loss,” he called out jokingly.

I ignored him and continued toward the yacht. The moment I stepped inside the venue, the energy of the place hit me all at once.

There weren’t a lot of people, but it sure as hell felt like it.

Young people filled the room. Groups gathered around high tables, laughing and clinking glasses together.

Some of them were familiar, as per my research. Rocco and I had spent enough time looking into different conglomerates and business families that I could easily recognize a few faces.

Most of them were children of powerful families. Some of them were influencers, models, and other social media personalities.

Everyone here was either rich, famous, or desperately trying to look like they were.

And suddenly I felt very, very overstimulated.

I took a slow breath and tried to calm myself.

Willow!

I turned toward the center of the yacht, where the source of the voice came from.

Serena sat there, glowing under the lights. Her dress was sleek and silver, hugging her figure perfectly, and her hair was straightened.

Marcus sat beside her. The moment our eyes met, I saw how he removed his hand quickly from Serena’s waist.

I ignored it and instead smiled politely and walked closer.

Hi, I said.

Serena beamed brightly.

You came!

Marcus looked at me, his eyes glazing over my entire figure. Meanwhile, a group of people surrounded them, watching the interaction curiously.

My stomach dropped slightly when I recognized some of them.

They were Marcus’s friends from college.

No way,” one of them said suddenly.

Willow?

Another voice chimed in.

Willow! It’s been forever!

Before I knew it, two of Marcus’s old friends stepped closer, grinning widely.

You look amazing, one of them said.

Seriously,” another added. You look good.

I pursed my lips slightly.

Thanks.”

Then I noticed a few other familiar faces.

Serena’s friends. Girls who had always floated around the same social circles back when we were still in

school.

Now that I thought about it, Serena and Marcus had always known each other. Their circles overlapped even back then.

How are you?one girl asked.

What have you been up to lately?another added.

Then came the inevitable question.

What’s your job now?

I did not hesitate.

I work as a secretary,I said simply as I was led to sit at the very edge of the cockpit seating.

There was a brief silence before the subtle reactions came bombarding.

Oh,

Wow.”

That’snice.

Their smiles looked polite, but I could hear the judgment and quiet amusement in their tones.

Wait,Serena said. Her eyes dropped to my bag.

Isn’t that the Dahlia bag in white?

Instantly, several heads turned toward it.

Yes,I replied calmly.

One of the girls gasped softly.

That’s impossible.”

Another laughed.

Did you

What?

steal it?

Serena has been wanting that bag for ages,” one of them said casually.

It’s almost impossible to get.”

My lips pressed together slightly.

No,” I said calmly. It was given to me.”

They stared at me for a moment. Then someone scoffed lightly.

It must be fake.”

Another girl nodded.

Yeah, it has to be.”

I sighed quietly.

Did they come here to interrogate me?

Well,” one of Serena’s friends said with a sweet smile.

I’m glad someone like you is here.

I raised an eyebrow.

It really balances the atmosphere,” she continued.

Thanks,” I said dryly.

I could already feel the tension building. This was exactly the kind of situation I had wanted to avoid.

Then Serena tilted her head slightly.

By the way,she said casually. Where’s your date?
