Chapter 6

Of course, thad to go back home for the festival. It had been a long time since I’d been away, and I missed my grandparents.

When the two elders found out what Isaac and my brother had done, they couldn’t exactly track down lease, but they sure could reach thy brother.

On the night of the Winter Moon Festival, they called to give him a piece of their mind.

“You want to avoid suspicion, huh? Then, when I get sick, don’t bother visiting, wouldn’t want to farnish your elite warrior reputation!”

“Freya’s been with Alpha Issac for all these years, and this is how he treats her? I should never have agreed to their relationship!”

“You’re supposed to be her brother, yet you just stand by and watch an outsider bully your sister! How can you face your parents!”

Grandpa hung up angrily.

When I took them back to their hometown, they tried to give me their savings.

I refused, but they were upset. “Take it, girl! You don’t have to put up with this!”

It took a lot of persuading before they finally relented.

The thought of being back home soon had me counting the hours.

I called my grandparents to let them know I’d be arriving tomorrow.

“Freya’s coming back! Quick, let’s prepare a grand meal for her!”

“Buy the freshest fish! I’ll roast fish for Freya!”

They were overjoyed.

I arrived at noon, and a table of food was already set

“Wash your hands and eat. Look at you, you’ve gotten so thin.”

Grandma gently stroked my face, and I couldn’t hold back. I buried my face in her arms, and the

The next day, what I didn’t expect was that Issac and my brother also came back.

But this time, he stayed silent.

It was then that I realized how much he had aged

Dark circles shadowed his eyes, and streaks of gray touched his temples.

“Freya, I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have treated you like that.” Issac’s voice was choked with emotion, and for the first time, regret flashed in his eyes.

I felt nothing. After the storm of emotions had passed, I’d already steadied myself.

“After she joined the elite warrior squad, her demands kept growing. She wanted Issac to help arrange a job for her family and get her brother into school.”

“She knew Issac was in a critical evaluation period, and still pressured him to apply for a merit quota,”

At this point, my brother slammed the table in anger.

“Then, when Issac refused, she went to the Elder Council and reported him for abuse of power, for violating recruitment regulations.”

Issac slumped in defeat.

It was true that Issac had used Chloe, but he had also genuinely invested in her–time, energy, and even planning for her future.

But the person he cared about most had stabbed him in the back.

This betrayal had broken him.

In his attempt to avoid suspicion, he sacrificed his girlfriend, only to end up like this.

There’s always something to hate in someone who’s pitiful.

Issac and my brother kept glancing at me, as if seeking some kind of comfort.

I couldn’t complain anymore.

He had gotten what he deserved.

But I couldn’t bring myself to offer any comfort either.

My phone vibrated, and I took a quick look before hanging up.

“Why didn’t you answer it?” my brother asked softly.

“Debt collectors.”

“But I gave you twenty thousand, and with your part–time work…”

“I’ve paid off half. It should be cleared by the end of the year.”

I took a sip of water, not mentioning how tough it had been to pay off the debt.

Issac’s face turned even more regretful as he sighed repeatedly, mumbling, “I should’ve saved

some money…”

Soon, everyone fell silent, the air thick with tension

Without another word, we each went to bed.

In the middle of the night, I got up to use the bathroom, and I saw the glow of a cigarette and the sound of suppressed coughing outside.

I watched quietly for a moment, and before he noticed, I turned and went back to my room.

For the next few days, we maintained a polite distance.
