79 A Ride Through Ruin 4
Arya’s POV
I shifted slightly, adjusting my clothes so my neck stayed covered.
Milley noticed and lowered her gaze respectfully, as if she understood.
The road signs began to change again.
Dragonclaw territory markers appeared.
Patrol vehicles passed occasionally.
Milley sat taller now, as if she wanted to look like she belonged, like she hadn’t picked up a runaway on the highway.
Then she blurted, voice still full of shock, “Wait, how did you even get Alpha Maxwell’s number?”
I stared ahead.
“He gave it to me,” I said.
Milley made a sound like she choked on air.
“He gave you his number,” she repeated, stunned.
“Yes,” I said.
Milley shook her head hard, laughing nervously.
“That’s… that’s insane,” she breathed. “I can’t even get a message to him unless it goes through the office.”
I didn’t say anything.
Because the truth would have turned her world upside down,
Because the truth wasn’t just that I had his number.
It was that I had once been someone worth giving it to.
Once.

Milley’s excitement bubbled up again, making her voice too loud.
“My mate is going to faint,” she said. “He thinks I exaggerate everything. This, this is not an exaggeration.”
I gave a small huff, almost amused.
Milley glanced at me again, then blurted out the question that had been sitting on her tongue.
“So… who are you?” she asked, voice careful but burning with curiosity. “Like, properly. Who are you?”
I stared at the road ahead, then said it simply, because there was no point pretending.
“I used to be the Luna of the Nightwind pack,” I said.
Milley’s entire body jerked.
Her hands tightened on the wheel.
“What?” she gasped.
“I fought in a battle alongside Alpha Maxwell,” I added, voice flat. “That’s how I know him.”
Milley’s eyes widened so much they looked like they might spill out of her skull.
Her mouth opened.
Then closed.
Then opened again.
She swerved, just slightly, enough that the tyres hummed against the shoulder line.
“Watch the road,” I snapped instantly.
Milley jerked the car back into the lane, breathing hard.
“Oh my God,” she whispered. “Oh my God.”
Her voice shook.
“I picked up,” she started, then stopped, like the words were too big

She glanced at me again, eyes shining with disbelief.
“You’re that Arya?” she breathed.
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t want to hear my name spoken like legend.
I didn’t feel like legend.
I felt like a woman with a dead child and a cut bond and blood in her memory.
Milley swallowed hard.
“I’m sorry,” she said quickly. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean,
“It’s fine,” I said, short.
Milley nodded, still shaken.

Then she straightened her shoulders like she’d found new purpose.
“I’ll get you in,” she said firmly. “If the Alpha said he’s issuing an order, then you’re getting in.”
Her tone carried pride now, like she wanted to be useful to something important.
I didn’t correct her.
I didn’t tell her that being “important” hadn’t saved me from being beaten.
I simply sat back and let her drive.
