-Andi-
I imagined things would be easier after that conversation with Beckett. We apologized, set boundaries, and we even spe our Sunday afternoon together on a simple date at the seaside. I see that he still hasn’t given up on making a perfect da this spot. All our dates here ended up in a disaster.
After dinner, we decided to walk on the beach, and Beckett bought me an ice cream cone from the same ice cream sho our first date,
“How was work with Siobhan?” Beckett asked while he licked the mint–flavored ice cream smear on his lips.
The sun was just about to set, and the seaside was a bit crowded. There were a few girls who asked to have pictures with Beckett, and I was ready to step aside, but Beckett pulled me back and put an arm around my shoulder.
This would leak on social media sooner or later, and my face on those photos was clear, as well as Beckett’s hand wrappe around my shoulder. This would be another topic for the trolls to feast on.
“It’s… fine,” there was a sudden hitch in my voice that I couldn’t control. I remember how rude Valerie and her minions b been since the Monday morning meeting.
Beckett spotted a vacant bench, and he tugged my hand towards it. Three girls were ready to take the seat and stepped b when they saw Beckett. They ask for pictures, though.
“Are you having a hard time adjusting to your work there?” he asked. He caught the hitch in my voice and figured that something was going on in the office.
I licked the rocky road ice cream from my cone, its sweet taste exploding in my mouth, while its frozen texture calmed n sentiments. The sunset cast pastel colors on the waters. It was a picture–perfect view, almost like a painting.
“A little,” I said, sighing. “I don’t think I’m cut out for office work,” I admitted. This was the first time I’m admitting that to anyone, and it left an unsettling feeling in my belly. Will Beckett find me a fool? There are people out there who’d kill to have the job I have. Or will he understand where I was coming from?
“I saw that this would happen,” he said, which came out as a shock.
I cast a glance at him, raising an eyebrow. “When Siobhan offered that job at her office, I told her you might not be comfortable in that setting. I even told her that it would be better to put you in one of our restaurants”
“You did?” I can’t hide the surprise in my voice.
He gave me a soft smile. “I saw how you were in the kitchen, Andi. You were meant to make people happy with their food.“1 blinked at him, as though I were speaking to a different version of him. “Our conversation last night enlightened my mistakes,” he admitted. “And if you don’t want to work at Siobhan’s, I can ask Cole to make you a permanent kitchen staff member in his club.”
I can’t hide the relief and my smile from reverberating. “And here I was scared you might be disappointed in me
“What?” He grabbed my free hand and squeezed it. “Never, Andi. You could be a stay–at–home girlfriend if you want to, and I’d still think you’re awesome.”
I rolled my eyes and pursed my lips. “Here we go again.”
He chuckled. “I’m kidding.” He gave my shoulder a nudge. “But my offer will stand until you change your mind.”
Chapter 120
“I won’t” I shook my head. I like having a job, Beckett
“How about when we have kids?” His question came out of nowhere, and I spewed the ice cream from my mouth. Glad tha no one was walking in front of us, or that would have been too embarrassing
Beckett chuckled and handed me his handkerchief. That’s quite a reaction you’ve got there,” he said and patted the side of my mouth
I was tongue–tied and wide–eyed, staring at him as he gently wiped the side of my mouth. There’s a small smile on his lips. his eyes flickering up to mine and dropping back to my mouth, waiting for my reaction.
“Don’t make jokes like that I murmured when he was done wiping my mouth.
“I wasn’t joking,” he said so honestly that I felt my heart do a cartwheel in my chest.
We were in a trance, lost in each other’s eyes as his words hung between us like an unspoken question and answer something I don’t want to delve into.
He’s not insinuating we’d get married soon, right? I mean, yes, we are boyfriend and girlfriend now, but I haven’t thought about my life with him that far. I don’t think I have the right to think of a future with him. He is Beckett Hale, for crying of loud. He deserved someone who’s in his league, not some school dropout who doesn’t even know if she had the right to dream
‘You don’t have to look so conflicted about it, Andi,” he said, falling back into his seat as though he found the answer he wa looking for in my face.
I couldn’t offer a response, so I just sank back into my seat and stared at the sunset. I was conflicted, yes, but not for the reason he’s thinking. He is Beckett Hale, and despite our relationship now, I don’t see myself having his kids. He doesn’t seem like that type of guy who’d marry someone like me.
The awkward air that hovered over us was disturbed by a few fans who asked to have a picture with him. This time, Beckett didn’t pull me to his side. He let me wallow in my thoughts.
I forgot to ask you about this earlier,” Beckett said when he went back to the bench. The ice cream was long gone by now, and I didn’t even notice it passing by my mouth. My head was filled with the question Beckett had dropped earlier.
What?
How did you find out about the security details I placed in your house?”
I don’t have a practiced answer for that. I thought he had forgotten about that already.
“I didn’t,” I admitted. “I thought I saw someone, and you just confirmed it.”
He raised an eyebrow at me, unconvinced. “Well, I made sure you won’t see them again,” he said. “But I won’t leave you unprotected, okay?”
“What do you mean?” I frowned at him.
“You got new neighbors just two houses down. They are my people. If you ever need help, you just come to them,” he said. He’s not even asking for my opinion, and I thought we already had an understanding.
“Don’t fight me on this, okay? They won’t do rounds like before. You won’t even notice them. It’s for my peace of mind that you can ask for help whenever I am not in the city,” he pressed, allowing his worry to slither around each word. There’s pleading in his eyes, and that made me weak in the knees. Beckett Hale doesn’t plead. This was his way of honoring our
conversation earlier.

Foxtet Joust make ovre they blend in. I don’t want our neighbors to think we’re trouble,” I reasoned, hoping that my father walt noxer horser on bing in the House Beckett was referring to.
The week had gone by a nemal Vallerse and her minions targeted me in a different way this time. They’d put my mug in the tra can, and for mole the hunch Mom prepared for me in the pantry. This was like high school all over again, but I didn’t hese fire to deal with them. I was too havey worrying about how I would come up with the ten thousand dollars my father wemanding from me
Beckett was on the road again, but we talked every morning before I went to sleep when he was just about to start his day
On Friday, I still didelt koow where I would get the money. I had drained my savings with the five thousand he asked for last week, and all I could come up with this week was one thousand dollars from my part–time job and my work at Siobhan’s
I didn’t want to touch the card Beckett had given me. I stared at it on Friday morning, as if it were a ticking bomb I was afraid to touch. But where will I get the money? I was out of time and options here.
Touching Beckett’s money was going back on my word and giving up my dignity, but not coming up with the money could
wallwch hell into our lives.
I landed at myself as I kept glaring at Beckett’s card, realizing that my father was already unleashing hell into my life just by what he was doing, He’s making me love my mind. Do I really need to wait for the worst before I put a stop to his antics?
On Saturday morning, I got a message from him again to meet at the same train station where we met last week. I was convinced that he was watching me because I got out of After Hour an hour later than the last time, and his message came through when I got into my car.
I found him in the same spot where he was sitting last week, wearing the same black hoodie and cap to hide his face. He was drinking coffee, and the train had just left when I arrived.
I’m glad you talked to your boyfriend and pulled out the security guards in your place.” he greeted with a grin.
You’re being such a good little pet, hm?”
Despite the drumming of my heart in my chest, I kept my cool. I stood my ground and held my facade in place.
Now, sit,” he patted the space beside him. “And let me count my money.”
cleared my throat and drew in a sharp breath. Here comes nothing. “I didn’t bring the money.”
He snapped his head, his eyes under the shadow of his cap narrowed at me. “What did you say?”
Felenched my fist inside the pocket of my jacket and met his glare with my own. “I don’t have the money, and I’m not giving

He let out a taunting, laugh. It sounded like the laugh of a demon. Memories from the past came crawling out of the cage on the back burner of my head. That’s the same laugh I’d hear outside the basement door each time he’d lock me inside as a punishment. The same laugh he’d let out when my mom was twisting in pain on the floor with busted lips and a bloody face, “You really want to do this, little pest?” he said as he rose to his feet and faced me. “You really wanna test my patience?”
I shook my head no as my heart crawled in my chest. I remember how scary he was each time he’d talk to me this way, each time I made something he didn’t like. “I don’t want to do anything.” I said. “And that’s what I’m doing. I don’t have the money, and I’m done being scared of you.”
A train had just arrived, and people got out of the wagon. There weren’t many of them, but it was enough to hide under the

safety of the public. My father’s hand clenched at his side as he removed the distance between us.
“You caused this,” he said. “You made me do this. The blood is on your hands, just remember that.”
The threat in his voice was so damn real that it made my insides twist with fear. He walked past me through the crowd, my shoulder feeling the weight of his anger.
“Andi, was that him?” Luna, the girl from two houses down from our home, rushed at me with furrowed brows I don’t know how a beautiful girl like Luna could be working in security. She’s got those perfect big beach curls that frame her round face. round brown eyes, full lips, and naturally tanned skin. But she knows me, and they didn’t hesitate to hear me out when I came to them yesterday morning.
“Yeah, he just… he just threatened me, Luna,” I gripped Luna’s arms with my shaking hands. “What if he hurt Caleb and Mom?”
Lune squeezed my shoulder reassuringly. “Jack and I will make sure he doesn’t hurt you or your family, okay?”
