The only sense of time I had in the dark room was my watch. Its dingy light was the only illumination in the room each time I checked the time and date.

I had been inside this room for over twentyfour hours, and my kidnapper visited me once during his phone call with Beckett. My stomach’s growl had been my sole companion, a sign that I was still alive. In this kind of situation where food was scarce, I’m grateful that I was used to being poor. Hunger didn’t bother me as it should have.

It’s seven in the morning the next day. I was in and out of sleep. If I lay down, it felt like I was sleeping on a block of ice, and if I leaned my back against the wall, the mold was much colder. I’ve gotten used to the tangy scent of rust that had rubbed off my clothes. And in the lack of sight, my other senses were heightened. I snapped to attention when I heard the muffled footsteps advancing to the room.

I was in the corner, the walls on each side of my shoulder, when the door latched open. Light slowly spilled into the room, blinding me for two seconds.

I blinked the blindness away and looked up at my visitor. It was Lucas Santiago. He holds a tray of food and a bottle of water. He walked through the door and crouched in front of me.

Eat,he murmured. On the tray were instant cup noodles, a piece of bread, and water. He set the tray down on the ground. The silver tray was a massive contrast against the stained ground.

He didn’t leave. He stopped in the doorway and lit a cigarette. I consider that action a pinch of kindness. If he leaves, it wouldn’t be my first time eating in the dark.

I reached for the cup noodles, the plastic cup warming my palm. I sigh with relief that rushed from my hands. Then the aroma of artificial seafood flavoring hit my senses as I removed the lid.

My stomach growled like a beast. I don’t think twice. If he had poisoned this food, then I would die with a full stomach. I picked up the spork from the tray and started eating the noodles after murmuring a gruff thank you to my kidnapper.

Lucas just stood there, inhaling his cancer stick languidly, and waited for me to finish my food.

CanCan I ask you something?I grumbled as I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand. My stomach was queasy from being too empty to suddenly being full.

Lucas didn’t say a word. He just tilted his head simply towards me with a frown. I took that as a yes.

Why are you doing this? I didn’t do anything to you,” I kept my voice controlled. Fear and uncertainty made my heart pound. This man could kill me any minute if I pissed him off.

It’s nothing personal,he simply murmured.

My face pruned. Nothing personal? This was all personal to me. He kidnapped me, and he’s playing with my life like it meant nothing. I might not be as important as Beckett, but I have a family who, I’m sure, is worried sick by now.

I didn’t comment on what he said. My intention was to understand why Lucas targeted me. Maybe then I can talk my way out of this.

You used me to make Beckett sign a marriage contract?he nodded. Who is he going to marry? That thought had resided in my head since the call he had with Beckett. There were too many conclusions that ran through my head, but none of them made sense.

Sloane,he answered without missing a beat, and my pulse thundered in my ears.

Sloane?I say with a frown. My blood ran even colder than it had all night. What do you mean?

Does Sloane hate me so much that she had to pay this man to kidnap me? I am nothing compared to Sloane. I’m just a naid.

Lucas went to pick up the tray, tossing the cup, plastic bottle, and wrapper on the floor. I was just on a call with your boyfriend. He’s on his way to file the marriage contract at the City Hall.He stretched to his full height, the tray winging rom his right hand, and started walking towards the door.

clawed my way to stand, using the walls to support my wobbly legs. Lucaswhat do you mean?

He paused and released a sigh, as though talking to me bores him to death. With a twist of his heels, he turned to me with a grim expression. With his back to the light, he looked like a demon sent to claim my soul.

You ruined the plans we had, chica,he started. If you hadn’t entered the picture, Sloane and Beckett would have been married by now.

Nothing he says makes sense. A pulse started to slowly drum in the temple as I tried to ponder what the hell he meant by hat. There’s a slow tear that materialized in my heart, and one more strike from Lucas, and I fear it would break.

This is a favor, because you aid our plans to reality,Lucas continued to speak in riddles. Sloane was the only woman in Beckett’s life until you came. We had a perfect plan. Sloane will seduce Beckett until they get married. His lips pursed as hough he tasted something bitter in his tongue as he said those words.

That’s when I struck the connection. He isn’t just some random guy Sloane hired to hurt me. He cares for Sloane.

And what? You will be Sloane’s lover?I scoffed; the serious look on Lucas’s face told me that being Sloane’s lover was never his option. He wants Beckett out of the picture. He will make sure that happens.

It’s done,Lucas grumbled. Beckett is married to Sloane, and she has his money at her disposal by now.

My throat was rougher than sandpaper as he pulled the door closed. The moment the room was bathed in darkness, my legs gave out, and I dropped to the floor with a thud.

I pulled my knees to my chest and hugged myself, rubbing my hands up and down my arms. I was searching for comfort, but nothing could stop the tear in my heart from getting longer and wider.

Beckett is now married to Sloane?I murmured through the darkness as tears pricked my eyes. Warm liquid streams down my cheeks as I hear my heart breaking into tiny pieces.

I couldn’t admit it before, and I don’t think I ever will. I had fallen in love with Beckett, and it took this whole fiasco for me to admit that to myself.

A sardonic laugh rolled off my chest. It filled the room and clutched my throat until breathing became an ordeal. I rolled onto my side, crouched into a fetal position as I embraced myself through this heartbreak.

Beckett had always been too good to be mine. It’s the very reason I couldn’t admit my feelings to myself. Beckett will look good in the public’s eyes with Sloane, and he would never have a problem like this with her.

I sniffled and kept sobbing in the cold, dark room until I heard the sound of gunfire outside. I pulled myself together and pushed up to my feet.
