Chapter 142
-Anuli-
I know that Siobhan, Beckett, and Cole grew up together, but I never really asked why there seems to be an animosity between Siobhan and Cole. Tension sparked between them, but I sensed Siobhan backing down after what Cole had just announced.
I was torn between being grateful for Cole’s interruption. He’s practically saving me from facing Beckett. Then there’s a part of me that hates being dragged back into the very thing that I am trying to escape from. The kidnapping, Lucas, and the case. But I gotta be grateful, right? Cole was a busy man, and he went out of his way just to bring me this news himself. I don’t want to be the ungrateful bitch who’s gonna make it difficult for the man who’s done nothing but help me since the day we met.
I turned to Siobhan. She already knew what I was gonna say. Opening her palm to me, she waited for the folder that contained Beckett’s contract. “I’ll take care of that.”
Her words had the opposite effect on me. I should be grateful for her understanding, but there’s this tiny voice in my head hat demands that Siobhan disagree with Cole.

If his aim was to engross me in a conversation, he succeeded, but the tension in my shoulder grew tighter the more I tried to decipher Cole’s plan. “You’re not taking me to Beckett, are you?” I aimed for my voice to be threatening, but there’s this trembling that could only be associated with fear. “I’m not ready, Cole.”
“What?” He made a face, eyebrows furrowed. “Why would you think that…” he trailed off, clicking his tongue as though he put two and two together. He let out a snort, and his smirk was annoyingly conceited. “I’m not interested in getting between you and Beckett, Andi.”
I didn’t realize I was holding my breath. I blew it out, my shoulder slumping in relief. “You’re not?”
“Yup,” he chimed. “I have more pressing matters on my plate than playing matchmaker with you two.”
I blinked at him. “That’s not-”
“Nah. I don’t wanna hear it. You two look absolutely miserable, you know that?” Here he goes again, dropping information I don’t want to hear. “I’m sure you two can make it through whatever phase you are going through,” he murmured dismissively. I don’t know whether to be relieved by that or not because this pressing matter he’s pertaining to? I think it concerns me, or else he wouldn’t fetch me himself.
“It’s not a phase, Cole,” I lay out, falling back into my seat as I watched the city blur in the window. “Where are you taking me, anyway?”
“To the development of your case,” he rolled out.
“What?” I’ve never met someone who speaks in riddles like Cole. “Isn’t that the police’s job?”
He looked at me as if I were the one who couldn’t speak English. When I just stared at him, waiting for an explanation, he pursed his lips. “Come on, Andi. Haven’t you figured out how we do things yet? Have you seen any news about Sloane getting arrested?”
Beckett and Cole do things differently; I get that. They have bodyguards, and even assigned a few to our home, but I assumed that was because their family is rich. Sticking their nose into the authorities‘ job didn’t cross my mind.
And about Sloane, I haven’t actually watched the news, but if Sloane had been arrested, I think Siobhan would have told me. She doesn’t like Sloane’s guts as much as I do.
‘See?” Cole grumbled, seeing through my silence. “If it were me, I would have given Sloane to the authorities.”
Then I remembered back at the police station. Luna insisted she speak to the police on my behalf. This was part of their plan: withholding information.
‘Where is Sloane now?” I asked because Sloane is working with Lucas, which was loud and clear. She clearly wanted to hurt ne, and if she’s still out there, she could retaliate.
‘She is not the problem,” Cole murmured. “Beckett made sure she wouldn’t hurt you again.”
‘So we are not meeting Sloane?” I was itching to know how Beckett could have stopped Sloane from hurting me. What could he possibly hold over her head?
‘Nope.”
“Then where are we going? Did you find Lucas?”
“Not yet,” Cole grumbled as he parked the car in front of After Hour. “And the answer to your first question,” he pulled the hand brake and looked at me, contemplating. “Just see for yourself.”
